Step 1: Identify the wet side and remove all pump power

Use the EcoTech QuietDrive manual for your model and confirm that the wet-side assembly is the matching design. ES and QuietDrive disassembly instructions are not interchangeable. Turn the pump off and disconnect its power; disconnect an attached backup supply as well so it cannot start unexpectedly. Keep other necessary aquarium circulation operating while this pump is unavailable. Arrange a clear place to work without balancing the controller over the water or resting loose magnetic parts beside fragile objects.

Step 2: Support the dry-side motor before removing the wet side

Check that the outside motor is supported by the prescribed cord mounting arrangement before separating the magnetic halves. Hold it so it cannot fall when the wet side comes away from the aquarium glass. Lift out the wet side and put it in the maintenance bucket. Preserve the dry-side spacer and its existing glass-thickness setup rather than changing them during washing. The cord should remain oriented as shown in the installation instructions. Wipe the outside assembly only as appropriate for dry electrical equipment; it is not a submersible aquarium pump.

Step 3: Disassemble only the wet-side cleaning components

Follow EcoTech's MP40 QuietDrive wet-side disassembly demonstration for the exact housing and propeller arrangement. Work over the bucket or a padded surface so a slippery part cannot fall onto tile. Keep the components grouped and note their orientation instead of improvising a twist on an unfamiliar assembly. The ceramic axle is vulnerable to damage from a drop or sideways force. If a component will not release as illustrated, stop and identify the revision rather than using pliers to make a different wet side follow the video.

Step 4: Choose brushing alone or a controlled mineral soak

Soft growth and loose debris may come away with gentle brushing under running fresh water. For calcium deposits, EcoTech's wet-side stall guidance specifies equal parts hot water and white vinegar for one hour, followed by cleaning. Apply that bath only to the appropriate wet-side parts, not the motor, driver or cables. Do not turn a limited soak into an overnight treatment or add stronger acid because the deposit is stubborn. Use a container reserved for this task so household detergent residue is not introduced.

Step 5: Brush, rinse and inspect the moving assembly

Use a soft toothbrush and cloth to remove loosened material from the cage and accessible wet-side surfaces. Rinse the separated parts thoroughly with fresh water, taking care not to lose small components down a drain. Inspect the magnet covering, axle and housing for cracks, swelling, rubbing damage or missing pieces. Deposits can obstruct motion, but physical damage is not corrected by a longer vinegar bath. Do not add household oil or grease to quiet the assembly. Reassemble according to the model demonstration without forcing a part that no longer fits normally.

Step 6: Clean the mounting area and restore the magnetic alignment

Remove algae from the inside glass with an aquarium-appropriate scraper that will not damage the tank material, and wipe the outside mounting area with a damp cloth. Keep grit from being trapped between the pump and the glass. Submerge the assembled wet side and let trapped air escape before bringing the magnetic halves together in their original position. Support the external motor throughout this process. Confirm that the spacer arrangement and cord support are still correct; cleaning does not change the aquarium's glass thickness or eliminate the need for a secure mounting setup.

Step 7: Restart gently and assess the result

EcoTech's post-cleaning stall procedure calls for running at the lowest speed for a few minutes, adjusting alignment if necessary and then returning to the desired setting. Keep fingers away from the moving propeller and disconnect power again before any further disassembly. Persistent red/green warnings, grinding or repeated separation need troubleshooting rather than repeated restarts. The MP40 QuietDrive manual suggests wet-side cleaning roughly every six to eight weeks, with conditions determining whether it is needed sooner. Keep a simple record of deposits and noise so the interval reflects this aquarium rather than an arbitrary calendar.
