How to Clean an Ember Mug 2
The Ember Mug 2 is a washable drinking vessel with a battery, temperature sensor and gold charging rings built into its base. Ember describes the mug as IPX7 water-resistant, but still directs owners to hand-wash it with warm soapy water and a soft sponge, never a dishwasher. The key risk comes after washing: moisture or residue on the gold rings can corrode contacts or interfere with the charging coaster. The interior coating also needs nonmetal, nonabrasive tools. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Remove the mug from power and let it cool
Take the Mug 2 off its charging coaster, disconnect the coaster from power if you will clean nearby and empty the drink. Let the mug reach a comfortable handling temperature. Never clean it while sitting on the powered coaster, and do not pour a cold cleaning solution into a very hot mug.
Step 2: Rinse loose drink residue promptly
Rinse the interior with warm water before coffee, tea or cocoa dries into a ring. Ember's IPX7 rating supports hand washing and temporary water exposure, but avoid unnecessary prolonged soaking. Keep the electronic charging coaster at the other side of the counter so it cannot be splashed.
Step 3: Hand-wash with a soft sponge
Add mild dish soap and warm water, then wipe the interior, rim and exterior with a soft nonabrasive sponge. Use light pressure and let the soap loosen film. Do not put the mug in a dishwasher. Avoid steel wool, scouring powder, hard-bristle brushes and abrasive cleaner that can scratch the ceramic coating or finish.
Step 4: Clean the bottom without damaging charging rings
Wipe around the gold charging rings gently with the soft sponge rather than scraping the grooves. Rinse away soap and inspect for a slippery film. Do not polish the contacts with metal, sandpaper or abrasive eraser. Surface damage or persistent dark corrosion needs Ember support, not stronger scrubbing.
Step 5: Treat stubborn interior stains conservatively
Ember's care resources describe baking-soda paste or white vinegar as stain options. Start with the mildest: allow warm soapy water to sit briefly, then wipe. If needed, use a thin baking-soda paste with a soft cloth or a controlled white-vinegar treatment, following current Ember directions. Stir with wood or silicone, not a metal spoon, and rinse thoroughly. Do not mix cleaning chemicals.
Step 6: Rinse until no cleaner remains
Use clean warm water and rotate the mug so the rim, interior and exterior are rinsed. Coffee flavor can be affected by detergent or vinegar residue, and residue around the base may transfer to the coaster. Smell the empty mug and wipe once more if cleaner odor remains.
Step 7: Dry the mug and gold rings completely
Dry the vessel with a clean towel, then use a dry lint-free corner around both gold rings. Stand the mug upright in open air until no water remains in the ring channels. Ember warns that wet gold rings or pogo pins can corrode and cause charging problems. Do not use a hair dryer, oven or other external heat.
Step 8: Clean the charging coaster dry
With the coaster unplugged, lift crumbs with a dry soft brush and wipe its surface and spring-loaded pins with a dry lint-free cloth. Do not rinse it, spray cleaner onto it or press the pins sideways. If liquid was spilled over the coaster, disconnect it and contact Ember if complete safe drying is uncertain.
Step 9: Inspect before charging
Confirm that the mug base, gold rings, coaster recess and pins are clean and completely dry. Set the mug down level without twisting it against the pins. If charging is intermittent, remove it, inspect for moisture and reseat once dry. Stop using the system if the coating chips, battery area swells, coaster overheats or contacts remain corroded.
