How to Clean an Epson EcoTank ET-2800 Printer
The Epson EcoTank ET-2800 and ET-2803 use permanent printheads and refillable ink tanks. Faded lines or missing colors should be diagnosed with a nozzle check and cleaned through the printer's maintenance controls—not by wiping the nozzles or pouring solution into the carriage. Epson notes that head cleaning consumes ink and should be used only when print quality declines. If ordinary cleaning does not help after the allowed attempts and waiting period, Power Cleaning is a separate ink-intensive procedure with tank-level requirements. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Separate physical cleaning from printhead maintenance
Use physical wiping for the exterior, scanner, and accessible paper dust. Use the ET-2800 Maintenance menu for nozzles and printhead flow. Never touch or wipe the printhead nozzles, encoder strip, ink tubes, timing belt, or carriage rail. Manual cleaning fluid can damage calibration and ink delivery.
Step 2: Power down for exterior cleaning
Finish all jobs, turn the printer off with its power button so the head parks correctly, wait for lights to stop, unplug power and data cables, and remove paper. Let the printer cool. Keep it level so ink does not move through the tank vents, and do not tilt it for easier access.
Step 3: Wipe the exterior and control panel
Use a soft dry lint-free cloth first. For compatible exterior grime, use a cloth lightly moistened with water and wrung nearly dry, then finish dry. Do not spray the printer or use alcohol, thinner, abrasive cleaner, oil, or lubricant. Keep water out of seams, buttons, ports, paper slots, and tank openings.
Step 4: Clean the scanner glass and document cover
Open the cover and remove dust from the glass and white backing with a clean dry microfiber cloth. If the exact Epson instructions permit a damp cloth for a mark, apply water to the cloth and prevent liquid from reaching the glass edges. Do not press on the scanner surface or spray glass cleaner directly.
Step 5: Use the paper-guide cleaning routine
If printouts show ink on the back or the paper path is soiled, load plain paper and select Maintenance, Paper Guide Cleaning. Follow the control-panel prompts so paper passes through and lifts residue. Repeat with fresh sheets until they emerge clean. Do not reach into the paper path with a wet cloth or sharp tool.
Step 6: Print a nozzle check before cleaning the head
Load plain paper, open Maintenance, and print a Nozzle Check. Compare the pattern to Epson's example. If all lines are complete, do not run Head Cleaning; the problem may be paper, settings, alignment, or another cause. Head cleaning consumes ink and should be reserved for missing segments or incorrect colors.
Step 7: Run one normal Head Cleaning cycle
Confirm no error is displayed and the ink tanks are adequately filled. Select Maintenance, Head Cleaning, and start the cycle. The power light flashes while cleaning. Epson warns never to turn off the printer or open the relevant covers during the cycle. When it ends, print another nozzle check and compare.
Step 8: Limit repetition and use the waiting interval
If gaps remain, follow the ET-2800 guide's limit for ordinary cleaning attempts. Epson's nozzle-check guidance says that if there is no improvement after cleaning up to three times, turn the product off and wait at least 12 hours before trying again. Repeated immediate cycles waste ink and can fill the maintenance system without dissolving a stubborn clog.
Step 9: Use Power Cleaning only when criteria are met
Power Cleaning is for persistent missing nozzles after normal cleaning and the required wait. Read its warning screen, verify every ink tank meets the required level, and understand that it consumes substantial ink. Start it from Maintenance and do not interrupt. If it does not improve the nozzle check, wait the Epson-specified interval before another attempt and seek support rather than repeating it.
Step 10: Handle external ink and return to service
For ink outside the tank opening, wear gloves, blot without spreading, and wipe only documented exterior surfaces with a water-damp cloth. Keep ink out of buttons, seams, and paper paths. Close every tank cap and cover, reconnect cables, print a nozzle check and test page, and leave the printer level. Transport only with Epson's ink-tank and head-position procedure.
