How to Clean an ESPRO P7 French Press and Its Double Micro-Filter

Step 1: Let the press cool and remove the grounds

After serving, let the remaining liquid cool enough for safe handling before lifting the plunger assembly. Tip out the leftover liquid carefully and collect the grounds for your normal waste or compost route; do not deliberately flush a dense mass of grounds into a drain. If you used a paper filter, discard it rather than leaving it between the reusable baskets. Keep the plunger supported so the filter does not strike the sink. This first emptying step makes it easier to see which surfaces still carry oily residue.

Step 2: Twist the two micro-filters apart

Hold the filter assembly securely and separate the nested baskets with the twist action described in the ESPRO FAQ. Identify the coarser outer basket and the finer inner basket before setting them down. Both meet coffee and both need cleaning; removing visible grounds from the outer layer does not clear the smaller screen inside it. Avoid gripping or bending the mesh to gain leverage. If a part resists normal separation, stop and check the assembly rather than twisting the rod against the filter cage.

Step 3: Wash each basket inside and out

Use soap and water with a soft sponge or cloth to lift visible grit and the slippery coffee film from each basket. Support the plastic cage while working across the mesh so pressure does not deform the screen. Pay attention to the bottom and the places where the two baskets overlap. Rinse from more than one direction until visible particles and suds are gone. Do not enlarge mesh openings with a needle or attack a deposit with a metal brush; damaged filtration surfaces need replacement, not more force.

Step 4: Clean the vessel, lid, and sealing edge

Wash the carafe interior with a soft sponge or gentle bottle brush, reaching the base and the upper rim. Clean the lid and accessible plunger surfaces, then inspect the silicone sealing edge for grounds lodged against it. Avoid stretching or pulling at a seal just to remove a stain. ESPRO's published care instructions allow top-rack dishwashing of press parts; separate the filters first so water can reach them. Hand washing still makes it easier to inspect the fine mesh and remove a localized deposit.

Step 5: Use a dedicated deep clean for lingering coffee oils

When ordinary washing leaves stale odor or oily buildup, use the manufacturer's recommended Deep Clean product and follow the current package dose, water temperature, soak time, and rinsing instructions. ESPRO suggests a monthly deep clean. Do not invent a concentrated chemical mixture or combine the product with another cleaner. Separate the baskets before soaking so the solution reaches their inner faces. A lingering soap taste calls for more careful rinsing and the approved cleaning treatment, not fragrance, disinfectant, or a stronger brew to mask it.

Step 6: Dry separately and inspect the filter fit

Set the washed components apart with openings exposed to the air. Check the mesh for tears, the cage for cracks, and the sealing edge for a split or distortion before nesting the baskets together again. Reassemble using the normal engagement points without forcing a mismatched part. If you need a replacement, confirm the press size and generation: ESPRO says current replacement filters are not compatible with every model made or purchased before January 2020. A similar-looking basket is not sufficient proof of a correct fit.

Step 7: Interpret resistance and retained liquid correctly

At the next brew, use the proper coarse grind and avoid forcing a plunger that is unusually difficult to depress. Recheck both screens for blockage once the contents are cool enough to handle. Some liquid held beneath the filter is part of this press's separation design, not evidence that a drain needs opening. Do not drill or modify the assembly to recover it. The P7 must not be placed on a stove, campfire, or in a microwave to dry it or heat a cleaning solution.
