Step 1: Confirm the product, finish, and installation status

Look for a spare plank, invoice, or installer record identifying the Marmoleum product and whether any additional finish has been applied. Do not choose a stripping product merely because a floor is described as linoleum. Forbo's Marmoleum floor-care guidance explains the factory-finished approach. If the installation is new, wait for the installer and adhesive instructions to permit wet cleaning; published regional documents use different waiting periods, so do not assume one universal deadline for every construction.

Step 2: Remove loose dirt before introducing water

Sweep, dust-mop, or vacuum with a suitable hard-floor attachment, including around chair legs and at entrances. Lift small furniture where safe instead of dragging it over grit. Clean the mop head before using it on the floor; a pad carrying sand from an outside doorway can defeat the purpose of the first pass. Look closely at dark tracks after dry cleaning. Some will disappear with loose soil, while scuffs or sticky deposits will remain and can be treated locally.

Step 3: Mix the correct neutral cleaner

Choose a cleaner compatible with Marmoleum and the actual finish, and measure any dilution from its label. More concentrate is not a substitute for removing dirty water. Forbo's floor-care instructions warn against aggressive alkaline or acidic cleaners and abrasive methods for routine care. Do not improvise with vinegar, oven degreaser, ceramic-tile cleaner, or a homemade chemical mixture. Prepare a manageable amount so you can replace dirty solution rather than spreading it into the next room.

Step 4: Damp-mop in small areas and remove soil

Use a damp mop, not a dripping one, and work through manageable sections with a path back to the doorway. Pick up the loosened dirt and refresh the mop or solution when it becomes dirty. Keep water from standing at joints, perimeter edges, and damaged areas. If the selected cleaner requires a rinse, use clean water with the same moisture control. A floor that looks glossy because it is wet is not yet a verified cleaning result; let it dry before judging haze or streaking.

Step 5: Treat remaining marks without abrasive shortcuts

Blot new spills promptly and use the approved cleaner on a soft cloth for a localized mark. Test an unfamiliar permitted product on a spare piece or discreet area before treating a visible section. Avoid scouring powder, abrasive eraser pads, and aggressive machine pads as routine fixes. If a black mark remains unchanged, identify whether it is a removable scuff or damage before escalating. Do not scrape a joint with a metal blade or apply solvent from an unrelated flooring guide.

Step 6: Preserve the factory finish and assess unusual discoloration

A temporary yellow cast or long-term sunlight difference is not necessarily dirt. Old added polish is another separate case: first identify what was applied, rather than mixing a new maintainer over an unknown residue.

Step 7: Let the floor dry and prevent repeat soil

Keep traffic, rugs, and furniture off the cleaned wet area until it is dry. Check whether haze disappears after drying before deciding to clean again. Use suitable non-staining entrance mats and clean them regularly so they capture dirt rather than release it. Fit appropriate furniture protectors and replace worn ones. If seams are lifting or the surface is damaged, seek an installer assessment rather than more intensive mopping.
