Step 1: Confirm the chair's materials and condition

Inspect the Pellicle for cuts, looseness, or failed edges. Cleaning cannot repair damaged suspension, casters, or controls, and a warranty or service question should be handled before disassembly.

Step 2: Prepare the chair without dismantling mechanisms

Remove personal accessories and place a towel beneath the chair. Set the chair upright and make controls easy to reach, but do not remove the seat, back, tilt mechanism, cylinder, or casters merely for routine cleaning. Herman Miller's owner care is surface-focused; unauthorized disassembly or lubricant can create a service problem.

Step 3: Vacuum the 8Z Pellicle

Fit a clean upholstery attachment and use modest suction. Support the mesh lightly from the opposite side while moving the nozzle across the seat and back in overlapping passes. Vacuum both accessible faces and the edges where dust collects, but do not press a hard crevice tool into the elastic strands or pull across a damaged area.

Step 4: Spot-clean the Pellicle conservatively

Step 5: Wash the frame, base, and standard armpads

Mix a small amount of mild detergent into warm water and soak a soft cloth, then wring it until it no longer drips. Wipe the molded frame, base, and polyurethane armpads. Keep liquid out of adjustment openings, the cylinder, tilt housing, and caster stems. For leather-covered armpads, stop and use Herman Miller's leather-specific instructions instead.

Step 6: Rinse those hard surfaces

Use a second cloth dampened with clean water to remove detergent. Rinse the cloth often so grime is lifted rather than spread. Herman Miller specifically includes thorough rinsing in its care sequence. Do not flood seams or let liquid run under armpads and into the mechanism.

Step 7: Detail controls and casters

Wipe adjustment paddles, knobs, and accessible supports with a nearly dry cloth. Rotate the chair to inspect caster treads and pick away loose hair only from the outside with fingers or a soft tool. Do not introduce oil, solvent, compressed air, or water into the wheel axle, gas cylinder, or tilt assembly. A binding caster is a part-service issue, not a reason to soak it.

Step 8: Dry and inspect before sitting

Dry the base, frame, and armpads with a soft cloth, then let the Pellicle air-dry in moving room air. Avoid heaters and direct high heat. Check beneath the seat for drips, verify that controls move normally, and wait until the mesh and every contact surface are dry before using the chair.

Step 9: Know when professional service is appropriate

Contact Herman Miller or an authorized dealer for a torn Pellicle, loose frame edge, cracked arm pad, failing cylinder, persistent mechanism contamination, or a stain that the material guide cannot address. Aggressive solvent, steam, pressure washing, soaking, and owner disassembly can turn a cosmetic issue into a structural or warranty problem.
