Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Find the upholstery code
Look beneath the chair, under a cushion, or on the product paperwork for W, S, WS, or X and the fabric pattern. Record whether the recliner uses iClean, another performance fabric, leather, or a mixed cover. If the tag is missing, ask La-Z-Boy to identify the cover before spot cleaning.
Step 2: De-energize a power recliner
Return the chair to a stable position, unplug its transformer, and keep the cord away from the cleaning area. Do not apply liquid near switches, USB ports, motors, battery packs, or connectors. Mechanical and power components are not upholstery and should receive only the dry owner care specified in the chair manual.
Step 3: Vacuum before adding cleaner
Use low suction and a clean upholstery tool on the back, seat, arms, footrest, creases, and accessible area beneath removable cushions. Avoid pulling loose threads into the nozzle. La-Z-Boy also recommends light brushing with a nonmetallic stiff-bristle brush for suitable fabrics. Dry soil can spread into a ring if wetted first.
Step 4: Blot a fresh spill immediately
Lift solids with a spoon and blot liquid with a dry white cloth, working from the outside inward. Do not scrub or press the spill into foam. Change cloth sections as they absorb color. Step 5: Follow W-code care

Step 6: Follow S- or WS-code care

For WS, either an approved water-based upholstery product or approved solvent may be acceptable, but test first. Do not mix the two cleaners or improvise with laundry stain remover.
Step 7: Treat X-code upholstery dry only
An X code means vacuuming or light brushing only for owner care. Do not apply water, solvent foam, or household cleaner. If dry removal is insufficient, contact a professional upholstery cleaner and provide the code and pattern. Repeated unapproved spot attempts can permanently ring or distort the fabric.
Step 8: Use the dedicated iClean or leather path
For iClean fabric, La-Z-Boy's procedure uses mild soap and water on a clean white cloth with gentle circular blotting, followed by removal of soap residue; follow its full pattern guidance. For leather, use only products approved for that leather type. Never assume an iClean method belongs on leather, suede, or every performance fabric.
Step 9: Dry slowly and restore the nap
Blot remaining moisture and let upholstery dry in moving room air. Do not sit on it, extend the footrest repeatedly, or use a hair dryer while damp. When fully dry, lightly brush a brush-safe fabric to restore an even appearance. Stop if color transfers, texture changes, or a ring expands.
Step 10: Inspect and reconnect
Confirm seams, cushion edges, creases, controls, and the floor beneath the chair are completely dry. Reconnect a power recliner only when no moisture approached electrical parts and the cable is undamaged.
