Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Switch off, unplug, and empty the machine
Move the mode selector out of use, switch off, unplug from the wall, and wrap the cord loosely away from the sink. Place the FloorMate upright on a protected surface. Remove both tanks before laying or tilting the cleaner. Never perform maintenance while it is connected to power or pour water over its handle, motor housing, or floor base.
Step 2: Empty the recovery tank
Lift out the dirty-water tank by its handle and carry it upright. Remove the lid, empty wastewater into a suitable drain, and discard any solid debris into the trash. Do not exceed the recovery-tank full line during use, and do not store wastewater in the machine; residue can coat the shutoff float and create odor.
Step 3: Rinse the tank, lid, float, and filter
Rinse the tank and lid under warm water. Gently clear film from the filter or screen and accessible float without bending or detaching parts that are not designed to release. Hoover's care guidance calls for regular filter cleaning, commonly monthly in normal use, with sooner care if pickup falls. Shake off water and let the assembly air-dry open.
Step 4: Remove the nozzle
With tanks removed and the machine unplugged, release the nozzle using its latches and pull it straight away. Rinse the detached nozzle under running water, working soil from its clear channels and squeegee edges with fingers or a soft brush. Inspect the rubber lips for tears or permanent waves, which can leave water on the floor.
Step 5: Release the SpinScrub brush block
Use the two brush-release tabs shown in the FH40160 manual and lift the complete brush block from the base. Do not pry against the drive mechanism. Remove thread and hair from the round brushes and around the block's shafts with fingers or blunt scissors, cutting away from bristles and plastic posts.
Step 6: Rinse and dry the brush assembly
Rinse the detached SpinScrub block with warm water until grit and solution residue are gone. Rotate the brushes by hand to inspect all sides but do not force the drive connection. Shake away water and set the block and nozzle in open airflow. Wipe the exposed base and suction inlet with a damp cloth; do not put the powered base under a faucet.
Step 7: Clear the pickup path
Look through the nozzle channel and accessible suction inlet for lint or a small obstruction. Remove it with fingers or a soft tool without pushing it deeper. Wipe debris from the wheels and base edges. Never use a sharp rod, compressed air into the motor path, or solvent on clear plastic and seals.
Step 8: Rinse the clean-solution tank before storage
Discard leftover solution before long storage, rinse the tank and cap, and inspect the cap valve for buildup. For use, fill with water and the specified Hoover hard-floor formula according to the tank and bottle lines. Do not substitute dish soap, bleach, vinegar, wax, oil soap, or a high-foam cleaner.
Step 9: Dry and reinstall removable parts
Allow the nozzle, SpinScrub block, recovery tank, lid, filter, and clean tank to dry until no trapped droplets remain. Return the brush block squarely to its drive location and press until both tabs lock. Seat the nozzle evenly, assemble the recovery-tank lid, and install both tanks. Do not force a latch that is out of alignment.
Step 10: Test wash and dry pickup modes
Plug into a safe outlet and test on a small approved sealed-floor area. Confirm the brushes rotate in wash mode, then use dry pickup to recover the solution. If the cleaner leaves water, stop, unplug, and inspect the squeegees, nozzle seal, filter, float, recovery-tank lid, brush block, and air path. Replace damaged rubber or filters rather than trying to scrub them back into shape.
