How to Clean an Instant Pot Duo Completely
An Instant Pot Duo has two very different cleaning zones: removable food-contact parts that can be washed thoroughly, and an electrical cooker base that must never be immersed. The stainless-steel inner pot, steam rack, lid, and many lid accessories are dishwasher safe, while the base, heating plate, control panel, and power connection require a barely damp cloth. A complete clean also means checking the sealing ring, float valve, anti-block shield, steam-release components, and condensation collector instead of washing only the pot. Duo generations and sizes differ, so use the manual for the exact model when removing lid parts.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Unplug, cool, and identify the model
Disconnect the cooker and wait until the lid, inner pot, heating plate, and steam parts are completely cool. Confirm that pressure is fully released before opening. Compare the lid with the exact manual because Duo, Duo Plus, and newer steam-release assemblies do not all disassemble in the same way. Never force a valve or cover that the manual does not identify as removable.
Step 2: Remove the inner pot and accessories
Lift out the stainless-steel inner pot, steam rack, condensation collector, and any other removable accessory. Remove food and rinse loose residue promptly. Instant Pot says the inner pot and steam rack are dishwasher safe, but hand washing with warm soapy water is useful when you want to inspect every surface.
Step 3: Wash the inner pot
Use mild dish soap and a nonabrasive sponge inside and outside the pot, including the underside that contacts the heating plate. For stuck food, soak the removed pot—not the cooker base—before wiping. Avoid steel wool and harsh abrasive powder that can scratch stainless steel. Rinse and dry the bottom completely so no water reaches the base during reassembly.
Step 4: Disassemble the lid as the manual directs
Remove the silicone sealing ring, anti-block shield, float-valve silicone cap, and removable steam-release piece only where the exact manual shows how. Keep small parts together. Do not pry, stretch, or puncture silicone. Inspect the ring for cracks, permanent deformation, and trapped food; a damaged or poorly seated ring can prevent proper sealing.
Step 5: Clean the lid and pressure components
Wash the lid, ring, and approved accessories in warm soapy water or use the dishwasher position specified by Instant Pot. Brush openings gently so steam passages remain clear. Rinse the float valve and anti-block shield from both directions. Never insert a sharp metal object that could enlarge a vent, damage silicone, or leave fragments.
Step 6: Clean the cooker base without adding water
Wipe the control panel, exterior, condensation rim, inside wall of the outer pot, and heating plate with a soft barely damp cloth. Instant Pot specifically directs owners to use minimal moisture here. Do not pour water into the base, put it under a faucet, spray cleaner into it, or immerse it. Remove crumbs only when the unit is unplugged and cool.
Step 7: Clean the condensation collector and rim
Empty the collector, wash it with mild soap, rinse, and air-dry. Wipe the rear channel and rim where condensation accumulates. Sticky liquid left there can cause odor and attract debris. Reattach the collector only after the slot and collector are dry and correctly aligned.
Step 8: Dry and reassemble precisely
Air-dry small lid parts where they cannot be lost. Reinstall the float-valve cap, anti-block shield, steam-release component, and sealing ring in their correct positions. Press the ring evenly into its rack and rotate it lightly to verify it is seated. Do not insert the inner pot until the heating plate, outer-pot wall, and pot underside are completely dry.
Step 9: Inspect before the next pressure cycle
Check that the float valve moves freely, steam passage is clear, ring is undamaged, and inner pot sits flat. If a pressure component was lost or damaged, replace it with the correct Instant Pot part rather than improvising. For persistent sealing-ring odor, clean and air it thoroughly; keeping a second ring for strongly flavored foods can reduce flavor transfer.
