How to Wash a K&H Thermo-Kitty Heated Cat Bed

Step 1: Unplug and inspect before dismantling

Move the cat elsewhere, unplug the bed and allow the warmer to cool. Inspect the visible cord and electrical component for chewing, cuts, discoloration or other damage. Do not return a damaged heater to service after washing the fabric around it. Record the bed model and any markings on the warmer so replacement advice matches the actual unit. Keep the plug out of the wet-cleaning area. A heated bed that is behaving abnormally needs assessment before it is reassembled for another overnight use.

Step 2: Separate the warmer, foam ring and washable fabric

K&H's Thermo-Kitty Bed care instructions direct owners to remove the Pet Bed Warmer from inside the cushion and remove the foam ring from the cover. Open only the intended access points; do not cut stitching or pull a wire through a smaller opening. Place the warmer in a dry spot immediately so it cannot be swept into the laundry pile. Photograph the original arrangement if useful. Reassembly should restore that arrangement rather than placing the warmer wherever it happens to fit.

Step 3: Remove hair and assess contamination

Lift loose hair and ordinary debris from the cover and cushion before laundering. Inspect seams for tears that might release filling. A small dusty patch is different from urine that has reached the electrical warmer or persistent mold inside padding. Keep heavily contaminated components out of routine reuse until K&H advises on the appropriate response. Do not apply an unverified enzyme product or disinfectant to an electrical component. Cleaning the washable cover cannot establish that a wet heater beneath it remains safe.

Step 4: Cold-wash the cover and cushion gently

For this Thermo-Kitty model, K&H specifies a gentle cold-water wash for the cover and cushion. Use a suitable amount of mild detergent and avoid adding unrelated heavy items that can pull or distort the bed pieces. Do not include the heater or foam ring in that load. Inspect the rinse result and repeat rinsing if detergent visibly remains. Strong perfume is not a useful substitute for removing soil. Keep the cleaned pieces separate from the unwashed work surface while dealing with the remaining components.

Step 5: Hand-wash the foam ring only when needed

K&H gives a separate method for the foam ring: hand-wash in soapy water, rinse, squeeze gently and air-dry. Support the foam while wet so you do not tear it at a narrow point. Do not wring it tightly or place it into the textile wash simply because the cover is machine washable. Allow enough time for the interior to dry, not just the surface. If the foam has broken down, lost its shape or retains contamination after an appropriate clean, ask about the correct replacement.

Step 6: Keep electrical care minimal and dry

The Pet Bed Warmer instructions distinguish wiping from washing and say not to put the warmer in a washing machine. Follow the exact warmer label for any external wipe, with it disconnected, and never immerse it. Do not open the electrical pad or attempt cord repair. K&H's cat-bed washing guidance reinforces removing the heater before cleaning washable bedding. If moisture reached the heater internally, seek support rather than assuming an overnight air dry resolves it.

Step 7: Dry fully and restore the designed arrangement

Line-dry the cover and cushion or use the no-heat dryer cycle specified by K&H; low heat is not the same as no heat. Air-dry the foam ring. Check all layers before reassembly, then restore the warmer and foam in their intended positions without pinching the cord. Do not add extra covers, fold the heater or change its placement to make the bed feel hotter. Follow the product's operating and testing instructions before returning it to the cat, and stop use for any abnormal smell, damage or performance.
