Step-by-step instructions

Before you begin: Inspect and prepare

Set aside drinking-quality water, the original two-way syringe and a clean work surface before opening either cap. Keep the bottom intake and discharged backwash away from the clean syringe handle and mouthpiece. Measure sanitation ingredients exactly; stronger bleach, an unapproved acid or a mixed chemical solution can damage the product and create hazardous fumes. If the filter was dropped hard, used on saltwater, exposed to fuel or possibly frozen after wetting, replace it rather than treating normal flow as proof of safe filtration.

Step 1: Inspect and establish a clean area

Check the plastic body, threads, caps and mouthpiece. Do not use a cracked or dropped filter. Wash hands, use drinking water and keep the mouthpiece and syringe from contacting untreated water. The cleaning path should not move contamination onto the clean side.

Step 2: Remove both cap assemblies

Take off the bottom plug cap and completely remove the top mouthpiece cap as LifeStraw directs. Set clean-side pieces on a clean towel. Do not pry at threads or use tools; cross-threading during reassembly can compromise the system.

Step 3: Attach the included syringe

Thread the Peak Solo syringe onto the intended connection. Tighten only enough to seal. Submerge the bottom of the filter in drinking water, not untreated source water or soapy wash water.

Step 4: Pull clean water through

Draw the syringe plunger upward until the syringe fills. This pulls drinking water through the membrane and can help release trapped air. Keep the submerged end below the water surface so the syringe does not pull air instead of water.

Step 5: Push the water back out

Press the syringe downward until the water travels fully back through and out the other side. Repeat the pull-and-push cycle several times. LifeStraw recommends this after each day of use to maintain flow and reduce clogging.

Step 6: Use the measured monthly solution

For regular use, LifeStraw's Peak Solo instructions mix one-quarter teaspoon of household bleach with two cups of water. Pull that solution through with the syringe five times, then follow the current official sequence for the final chlorine-water pull. Do not strengthen the mixture or combine it with vinegar or another cleaner.

Step 7: Close and allow the required rest

Follow the official cap and syringe positions, close the mouthpiece and let the unit rest for at least four hours or overnight. Keep it upright in a secure ventilated place away from children, food and incompatible chemicals. Do not shorten the process by heating the filter.

Step 8: Backwash five times with clean water

After the rest, repeat the backwash process five times with clean drinking water to wash out chlorine. Continue only with the official rinse method; never judge completion by adding another chemical. Reassemble the top cap, mouthpiece and bottom plug without cross-threading.

Step 9: Test and store within temperature limits

Test flow with safe water before travel. LifeStraw says not to expose Peak Solo above 140°F/60°C or below 32°F/0°C. Store where it cannot freeze, overheat, drop or be compressed. Never use it for seawater or chemically contaminated water.
