How to Clean and Backwash a Sawyer Squeeze Filter

A Sawyer Squeeze is cleaned in the reverse direction of normal filtration. Sediment collects on the hollow-fiber membrane, and a weak rinse from the dirty side may not restore flow. Sawyer says to remove the drinking-side cap, fill the cleaning plunger with clean water, press it against the drinking side and force water backward until it exits clear and easily. The company recommends backwashing after outings, when flow slows, before prolonged storage and again when returning the filter to use. Step-by-step instructions

Before you begin: Inspect and prepare

Keep the dirty-water side and drinking-water tools physically separate throughout the job, and wash hands before handling the clean outlet or syringe tip. Backwash over a light-colored basin so sediment changes and damaged parts are easy to see. Flow that remains poor after the complete official recovery procedure may indicate mineral deposits, heavy loading or damage; do not force a sharp object, high-pressure hose or compressed air into the fibers. For group use or emergency storage, label the filter's history and possible freeze exposure.

Step 1: Separate clean and dirty equipment

Wash hands and establish a clean-water side. Remove the filter from the dirty pouch and keep the drinking outlet, plunger and clean bottle from touching untreated water, mud or the dirty threads. Backwashing must use clean water so contamination is not pushed into the drinking side.

Step 2: Remove the drinking-side cap

Identify the clean-water outlet—the side you normally drink from—and remove its cap. Do not guess based only on how the filter was packed. The backwash travels opposite normal flow, from the drinking side toward the dirty-water inlet.

Step 3: Fill the plunger with clean water

Draw clean filtered or potable water into the Sawyer cleaning plunger. Hold it so the tip remains clean. If using Sawyer's cleaning coupling, connect a clean bottle of water according to its instructions instead of improvising a loose hose that may leak or contaminate the outlet.

Step 4: Make a firm outlet seal

Press the plunger tip against the drinking side or secure the official coupling. Support the filter body in the other hand. Do not crush, twist or strike the housing, and never drive a sharp nozzle into the outlet.

Step 5: Backwash forcefully

Push the clean water through in one firm stroke, opposite the filtration direction. Sawyer emphasizes force because it helps loosen debris from the fibers. Let the discharge go to waste. Do not catch it in the clean-water container or let the dirty end touch the plunger.

Step 6: Repeat until flow is clear and easy

Refill and backwash several times. Continue until the discharge is clear and resistance has eased. If flow remains slow, use Sawyer's warm-water and mineral-scale troubleshooting; its warm-water recovery limit is 135°F. Do not boil, mechanically probe or apply machine-generated pressure.

Step 7: Sanitize before prolonged storage

Follow Sawyer's current storage formula and the instructions for the exact model. Sawyer specifies one pouch capful of fragrance-free bleach per liter of water; the pouch cap is the measure, not a larger bleach-bottle cap. Backwash the diluted solution through the element as directed. Ventilate the area and never mix bleach with vinegar, acid or another cleaner.

Step 8: Dry and protect from freezing

After the official sanitizing sequence, drain the filter upright with ventilation and store it in a temperature-controlled place. Once a hollow-fiber filter has been wetted, freezing can damage fibers invisibly. Treat a used filter that may have frozen as unsafe and replace it.

Step 9: Re-wet and backwash before reuse

Before the next trip, inspect the housing and caps, backwash with clean water to re-wet the fibers and test flow. Do not use a cracked filter or one exposed to fuel, pesticide, mine runoff, seawater or another chemical hazard; this membrane is not designed to remove those contaminants.
