Step 1: Shut down, unplug, and separate removable parts

Turn the headset fully off rather than leaving it asleep. Disconnect the charging cable and remove batteries from controllers if their battery compartments need attention. Work away from a window where direct sun could enter the lenses. Remove the facial interface, silicone cover, and detachable head strap according to their instructions so sweat can be cleaned without carrying water toward the headset.

Step 2: Dry-wipe the headset body

Use a clean dry microfiber cloth on the front shell, arms, underside, and rigid areas around the interface. Lift dust rather than pushing it toward camera and vent openings. Meta says not to use alcohol or chemical cleansers on the device. If dry wiping does not remove a surface mark, Meta permits slightly dampening one corner of the microfiber cloth; squeeze it nearly dry and keep every opening free of moisture.

Step 3: Clean optical lenses from the center outward

Use a separate dry optical-quality microfiber cloth. Starting at the center of one lens, wipe gently in a circular motion toward the outside edge, then use a clean section for the other lens. Do not spray lens cleaner, water, alcohol, or disinfectant onto the optics or cloth. Avoid paper towels, tissues, clothing hems, and compressed air directed at the lens edge because scratches or forced debris can be permanent.

Step 4: Clear cameras, tracking windows, and sensors

With another clean dry section of microfiber, lightly wipe the external camera and tracking windows. Do not use a cotton swab that can leave fibers along a lens edge and do not push debris into seams. If a mark will not release with gentle dry wiping, stop rather than polish aggressively. Tracking trouble after cleaning can come from a smear left on one window, so inspect all windows under indirect light.

Step 5: Hand-clean the removable facial interface

First verify which interface is installed: stock fabric, silicone cover, open interface, or an accessory interface can have different instructions. Meta's general guidance says to remove washable facial interfaces, wipe off debris, and hand wash with cool water and mild liquid detergent without submerging them. Work the solution across the contact surface with your fingers, rinse out all soap without soaking rigid attachment pieces, and blot with a towel.

Step 6: Clean straps and head pads separately

Dry-wipe a rigid battery or elite-style strap unless its manual specifically allows water. For removable elastic straps and washable head pads, Meta permits cool-water hand cleaning with mild liquid detergent, followed by a thorough rinse and full air-drying. Do not reinstall a strap that feels damp at seams, adjustment hardware, or attachment points.

Step 7: Wipe controllers and charging contacts dry

Use a dry microfiber cloth around controller grips, buttons, thumbsticks, tracking areas, and battery covers. Turn the cloth frequently so skin oil is lifted instead of spread. Keep liquid out of gaps around triggers and sticks. Wipe sweat or moisture from any charging contacts before placing the headset or controllers on a charging dock.

Step 8: Clean the USB-C port only when dry debris is present

Do not place liquid, solvent, metal, or a pre-pasted toothbrush in the USB-C port. Meta's dry-cleaning instructions specify a new, dry, soft-bristle toothbrush. With the headset powered off and unplugged, use light circular and scooping motions without pressing hard on the connector tongue. Stop if the port is wet, burned, loose, corroded, or physically damaged rather than attempting to scrape it clean.

Step 9: Air-dry and inspect before reassembly

Leave every washed soft component detached on a clean towel in moving room-temperature air. Keep lenses covered from direct sun but do not seal damp parts in a case. Reinstall only when fabric, foam edges, seams, gaskets, and attachment points are completely dry. Confirm that the interface clicks in evenly, lenses are clear, cameras are streak-free, and the charging port is empty before powering on.

Step 10: Use a simple after-session routine

After active play, wipe sweat from the headset, interface, controllers, and charging contacts with dry microfiber before storage or charging. Let the interface air rather than immediately closing a damp headset inside a case. This short routine prevents most odor and film and reduces the need for frequent wet cleaning.
