How to Clean Michelin Tires Safely
Brown film on a Michelin sidewall is not automatically damage. Michelin explains that an anti-ozone ingredient can migrate to the rubber surface as normal brown dust, while road dirt and brake dust can create a similar appearance; its recommendation is mild soap and water. Cleaning is also an inspection opportunity, but it cannot make a bulge, cut, exposed cord or severe cracking safe. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Let the tires cool and inspect them dry
Park on level ground in shade and wait until tires and brakes are cool. Check each sidewall and visible tread for cuts, punctures, bulges, deep cracking, exposed cord, lodged objects and uneven wear. Michelin distinguishes ordinary radial sidewall indentations from outward bulges; a bulge or uncertain damage needs professional inspection. Do not clean a hot tire or crawl beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
Step 2: Separate tire and wheel-care products
Confirm the wheel finish before selecting its cleaner. Painted, polished, anodized and coated wheels can have different restrictions. Use one brush for rubber and another for wheels so brake grit is not dragged across finishes. Michelin's tire recommendation is mild soap and water; it does not authorize a harsh wheel acid, solvent or household degreaser on the tire.
Step 3: Rinse away loose grit
Use cool low-pressure water on one wheel area at a time. Rinse the sidewall, shoulder and accessible tread from top down, keeping high pressure away from valve stems, sensors and damaged rubber. Do not insert a tool into a puncture or pull out an embedded object when the tire may still be holding air; mark it for a tire professional.
Step 4: Wash with mild soap and water
Mix a small amount of mild soap in water, wet the dedicated tire brush and scrub the rubber with overlapping strokes. Michelin recommends this method for brown sidewall discoloration whether it comes from normal anti-ozone material, dust or brake dust. Focus on the raised lettering and texture without using an abrasive pad or grinding one area to change its color.
Step 5: Clean tread only where safely accessible
Brush mud and salt from visible grooves while the vehicle is stationary. Do not reach behind the tire near hot brakes or rotate a powered wheel. Stones can be lifted from tread only when they are superficial and the vehicle is safely parked; a nail, screw, glass shard, cut or suspected puncture should remain undisturbed until a trained tire technician evaluates it.
Step 6: Rinse thoroughly and skip glossy shortcuts
Rinse until soap and lifted soil are gone. Do not apply petroleum solvent, cooking oil or an unapproved dressing. A glossy product can sling onto paint, collect dust or create overspray on tread and brakes. Natural browning that returns is not solved by sanding the sidewall; Michelin describes anti-ozone migration as normal and says it may disappear over time.
Step 7: Dry and perform a second inspection
Towel the sidewall and wheel, then look again for cracks, bubbles, exposed material or unusual abrasion that soil concealed. Michelin says visible cord requires replacement and a tire with a bulge should be inspected. Also note one-sided or cupped wear, which can indicate alignment, balance or suspension concerns that washing cannot correct.
Step 8: Check cold inflation separately
When tires are cold, set pressure to the vehicle placard—not a decorative appearance or the tire sidewall maximum. Refit valve caps and look for a leaking or damaged valve. Cleaning does not replace monthly inflation checks, rotation or age review. A vibration, pressure loss or pull after cleaning needs diagnosis before continued driving.
Step 9: Prepare removed Michelin tires for storage
Michelin's storage guidance starts by cleaning wheels and tires with water, drying them well and removing stones and debris. Store in a cool, dark, dry location away from sunlight, ozone sources and electric motors. Airtight opaque bags can limit exposure when appropriate.
