How to Clean a Minelab MANTICORE Metal Detector
Saltwater and sand create a different cleaning problem from a few fingerprints on a detector screen. A Minelab MANTICORE needs fresh-water rinsing around its moving shaft parts, careful handling of its connectors and a dry charging interface afterward. Its waterproof rating is not permission to wash every accessory or detach the control pod before submerging it. This guide follows Minelab's detector-care instructions, with separate routes for ordinary dirt, beach sand and headphone-socket contamination.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Keep the waterproof assembly intact
Switch the detector off, disconnect any charger or power bank and set nonwaterproof accessories aside. Keep the control pod attached to the supplied upper shaft: Minelab warns that the battery compartment is waterproof only with that assembly intact, and aftermarket shafts can compromise its seal. Do not open the control pod or battery area for cleaning. Check that the coil connection and unused headphone socket are arranged as the manual requires. The MANTICORE's waterproof specification applies to the detector, not automatically to its ML 105 wireless headphones.
Step 2: Rinse beach sand before wiping the surfaces
After beach or saltwater use, rinse the detector promptly with clean fresh water. Let water move grit away rather than rubbing it across the display, handle or shaft. Minelab specifically cautions against wiping sand off because it can scratch the finish. Use a gentle flow and pay attention to corners where saltwater dried into a crust. Keep detached electronic accessories away from the rinse area. This is removal of salt and abrasive particles, not a pressure-washing job or an invitation to test seals with a concentrated jet.
Step 3: Flush the camlocks and hollow shaft sections
Open both camlocks and flush them with fresh water. Remove the rubber shaft bung identified in the manual, then flush the inside of the shafts so trapped sand can leave rather than being ground into the sliding surfaces. Support the detector while the locks are open; do not let the coil end drop unexpectedly. Allow these parts to drain and dry thoroughly before restoring the bung and adjusting the shaft length. If the sections still feel gritty, repeat the rinse rather than applying grease or forcing the shafts through their travel.
Step 4: Wipe ordinary dirt and protect the display
Once abrasive particles are gone, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap detergent for remaining grime. Use a clean lint-free cloth to dry the display and prevent water spots. Minelab prohibits solvent and alcohol-based cleaners on the detector, including its optical-plastic display lens. Check the screen protector separately: scratches in that replaceable layer do not necessarily mean the display beneath is damaged. Wash sunscreen or insect-repellent residue off your hands before handling the detector again, and do not spray those products directly over the controls.
Step 5: Inspect the coil, speaker grille and cable
Look at the skidplate for excessive wear and replace it before wear goes through to leave the coil unprotected. Check the coil cable for strain, kinks and tight bends as you clean around it. Flush dirt from the speaker grille with fresh water rather than poking through it with a pin or brush handle; damage there can affect waterproofing. If the coil connector will not fit easily, rinse away grit and let it dry before trying again. Do not use tools to tighten it or turn the fixed connector nut on the control pod.
Step 6: Handle the headphone connection as a separate check
After underwater use, dry and clean the area around the headphone plug or waterproof cap before unscrewing it. This prevents surrounding sand and water from being carried into the socket during removal. If sand or mud has accidentally entered, Minelab directs a gentle fresh-water flush followed by thorough drying. That is a specific socket-maintenance instruction, not a reason to soak the wireless headphones. Refit the appropriate cap when headphones are not connected, and use the headphones' own care instructions for their cushions, charging connection and electronics.
Step 7: Dry, check the locks and charge in a dry place
Give the shafts, connectors and exterior time to dry before packing the detector into a bag. Both sides of the magnetic charging interface must be clean and dry before connection, and charging must not take place underwater or in a wet, salty environment. Test that the camlocks hold under normal force. If adjustment is needed, open the lock and tighten its thumbscrew in small increments, closing and checking between adjustments without overtightening.
