How to Clean a Moccamaster KBGV Select

The Moccamaster KBGV Select is a glass-carafe drip brewer with a removable brew basket, nine-hole outlet arm, water reservoir, and hot plate. Coffee oils and grounds collect in the basket, lid, arm, and carafe; mineral deposits form inside the heating and water-delivery path. Those are separate problems: a coffee-machine cleaner targets oils, while a descaler targets limescale. Moccamaster ties regular deep maintenance to each box of 100 paper filters, a simple interval that works even when the brewer has no digital cleaning reminder.

Quick reference

After brewing
Discard grounds and wash the basket, lids, and cooled glass carafe.
Outlet arm
Remove only when cool, soft-clean all nine holes, and reinstall securely.
Coffee oils
Use a separate approved coffee-machine cleaner and freshwater rinses.
Scale
Descale after about 100 cycles using solution mixed separately in 32 ounces of water.
Electrical safety
Unplug before hand-cleaning and never immerse or spray the brewer base.

What you will need

  • Fresh water
  • Mild dish soap
  • A soft bottle brush and nonabrasive cloth
  • Moccamaster-approved coffee-machine cleaner
  • Moccamaster-approved descaling powder or solution
  • A separate container for mixing descaler
  • The glass carafe supplied with the KBGV Select
  • The current KBGV Select manual

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Unplug and cool the hot plate

Switch the brewer off, unplug it, remove the carafe, and wait until the hot plate and outlet arm are cool. Discard the filter and grounds. Do not pour water onto a hot plate or work around the outlet arm while the machine is hot; retained water can also be hot after brewing.

Step 2: Wash the brew basket and lids

Remove the brew basket, basket lid, and reservoir lid. Wash them with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft brush, paying attention to the basket outlet and drip-stop mechanism. Rinse thoroughly and air-dry. Move the drip-stop gently; do not bend the linkage or enlarge the outlet with a sharp tool.

Step 3: Clean the glass carafe

Let the carafe cool before adding wash water to avoid thermal shock. Wash the carafe and lid with warm soapy water and a soft bottle brush, then rinse well. For stubborn coffee film, use a coffee-equipment cleaner approved by Moccamaster rather than an abrasive pad. Inspect for chips or cracks and replace damaged glass.

Step 4: Wipe the reservoir and hot plate

Wipe the empty reservoir with a clean damp cloth only where accessible; never use an abrasive scrubber that can cloud or scratch it. Wipe the cooled hot plate and housing with a damp cloth and dry them. Do not immerse the brewer, spray the switches, or let liquid enter the base.

Step 5: Inspect and clean the outlet arm

When fully cool, remove the nine-hole outlet arm only as the manual shows. Rinse loose mineral particles and coffee splashes from its openings using water and a soft brush. Do not drill, enlarge, or scrape the holes. Reinstall the arm securely in its original position so water distributes evenly across the coffee bed.

Step 6: Run a coffee-oil cleaning cycle

When the carafe or water path develops brown oil residue, prepare an approved coffee-machine cleaning product according to its package and Moccamaster guidance. Run it through an empty brewer with no coffee or paper filter, then follow with the specified fresh-water rinses. Cleaning coffee oil does not remove mineral scale, so do not treat this as descaling.

Step 7: Descale after about 100 brew cycles

Moccamaster recommends descaling after every 100 cycles—conveniently, when a box of 100 filters is finished. Dissolve the approved descaling powder completely in 32 fluid ounces of warm water in a separate container, then pour that mixture into the reservoir. Set the empty carafe and basket in place and run a normal full brew cycle without coffee.

Step 8: Rinse and verify spray distribution

Discard the descale liquid, rinse the carafe and reservoir area, and run the required full reservoirs of fresh water. Watch that water exits all nine arm holes evenly without leaking at the connection. If flow remains poor after a correctly completed descale, stop repeating strong solution and contact Moccamaster support.

Specific cleaning questions

Open a question for a concise answer about stains, odors, safety, frequency, and troubleshooting.

How often should I descale a Moccamaster KBGV Select?
Moccamaster recommends about every 100 brew cycles, which is easy to track by descaling when a box of 100 paper filters is finished. Hard water may make timely maintenance especially important.
Is cleaning the same as descaling a Moccamaster?
No. Coffee-machine cleaner removes brown coffee oils and residue. Descaler dissolves mineral deposits in the heating and delivery path. Run the appropriate separate process and rinse after each.
Can I use vinegar to descale the KBGV Select?
Use a descaler approved by Moccamaster and follow its instructions. The official powder method calls for dissolving it in 32 ounces of warm water separately; vinegar can leave odor and is not the preferred method.
Can the glass carafe go in the dishwasher?
Follow the current manual. Hand-washing the cooled carafe and lid with mild soap and a soft bottle brush avoids harsh detergent, impact, and thermal shock. Replace a chipped or cracked carafe.
How do I clean the nine-hole outlet arm?
Unplug and fully cool the brewer, remove the arm only as the manual shows, and rinse or soft-brush the holes. Do not scrape, drill, or enlarge them, and reinstall the arm securely.
Why is the brew basket overflowing?
A blocked basket outlet, incorrect filter fold, too-fine grounds, excess coffee, or an improperly positioned drip stop can restrict flow. Clean the basket and verify setup before changing or forcing the mechanism.
Can I scrub the clear water reservoir?
Use a soft damp cloth only on accessible surfaces. Abrasives can scratch or cloud the reservoir, and pouring soap through the internal path can leave residue. Use the supported cleaning or descale cycle for internal areas.
Why are only some outlet-arm holes flowing?
Mineral particles or residue may block holes, or the arm may be seated incorrectly. Clean it gently, descale the brewer, and reinstall it securely. Seek support if uneven flow continues rather than enlarging holes.
