How to Clean a Neakasa M1 Litter Box
The open-top Neakasa M1 and M1 Plus separate into a washable litter chamber and waste bin surrounding a main powered unit that must never be rinsed. Neakasa recommends emptying the waste bin every seven to ten days for one cat, a full litter dump and clean monthly, and a deeper waste-bin clean every one to two months. The litter chamber has an unusual drying rule: stand it upright with the opening facing up, not upside down, so retained water does not reach vulnerable areas. A loose waste bag can also block the infrared sensor and trigger a red Empty indication. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Schedule maintenance while the cat is away
Provide the cat with another litter box and wait until the M1 is idle. Check the app or display for errors and identify M1, M1 Plus or M1 Lite Plus. Empty the waste bin before a full litter dump so it has room to receive the chamber contents and the drawer will not jam.
Step 2: Empty and clean the waste bin
For one cat, Neakasa recommends emptying the bin every seven to ten days and every seven days in hot weather. Tie and remove the bag, then rinse the removable bin thoroughly. Deep-clean it every one to two months or sooner for residue. Air-dry before inserting a fresh bag.
Step 3: Fit the new bag clear of the sensor
Install the compatible liner smoothly against the waste-bin walls. Neakasa notes that a bag blocking the infrared sensor can make the Empty button flash red. Keep excess plastic below the sensing path and away from the drawer edge so it cannot snag when the bin moves.
Step 4: Run the monthly complete-empty routine
Press and hold the Empty button for three seconds to dump all litter according to Neakasa's procedure. Watch the cycle and do not reach into moving parts. If the drawer binds because litter is heaped inside, gently move it back and forth four or five times to level the contents before slowly removing it.
Step 5: Unplug and remove the litter chamber
Once empty and stopped, unplug the unit. Unlock and remove the side covers and chamber in the order shown by the manual. Support the chamber rather than pulling on the silicone pad or door. Inspect for scratches, damaged seals or packed litter before moving it to the wash area.
Step 6: Rinse or soft-brush the chamber
Neakasa permits rinsing the removed litter chamber with water or cleaning it with a soft brush. Clear clumps from seams and the silicone pad without abrasive tools. Do not wash the main unit, pour water through drive openings or press on the chamber door in a way that could warp it.
Step 7: Wipe the main unit and dry the chamber upright
Use only a damp cloth on the main powered housing; Neakasa says never to rinse it. Stand the washed chamber upright with its opening facing upward while it dries. Do not invert it, because Neakasa warns the wrong drying position can retain or direct water where it may cause damage.
Step 8: Reassemble, refill and recalibrate
When the bin and chamber are dry, reinstall all covers and the smooth bag. Add compatible litter without exceeding the internal 100% line. Neakasa advises adding litter below 60%; after a refill, press Level or wait about one minute for automatic leveling. Recalibrate if the litter type changed, then observe a complete clean cycle.
