How to Clean a Pentair IntelliChlor Salt Cell

Step 1: Identify the cell and decide whether acid is necessary

Read the label to distinguish legacy IntelliChlor IC models from IntelliChlor Plus or LT. Review its manual, cleaning-kit orientation, dilution, and warnings. Inspect through the cell opening for hard white calcium bridging the blades. A reminder light alone does not prove that acid is needed, and routine calendar cleaning can remove valuable electrode coating.

Step 2: Shut off all circulation and cell power

Turn off the filter pump and salt-cell power at the required controls or breaker, isolate any automatic restart, and close valves only as the plumbing procedure requires. For Plus/LT, disconnect pump, automation and cell power at the main breaker and wait at least 60 seconds for stored charge before service. Relieve filter-system pressure by the filter manual before loosening any union. Never disconnect, remove, or energize a cell under flow or while wet electrical connectors are exposed. If the equipment pad is unfamiliar or a controller can restart automatically, use a pool professional.

Step 3: Remove the cell without stressing plumbing

Photograph the flow arrow and connector orientation. Disconnect power according to the manual, loosen the unions while supporting the plumbing, and remove the cell. Protect O-rings, union faces, and the cable from grit and acid. Do not twist the cable, lose a gasket, or use tools against the coated internal blades.

Step 4: Inspect and rinse first

Look for scale, leaves, and foreign debris in good light. Rinse through the cell with a garden hose, directing loosened material away from yourself. Pentair support identifies a hose jet as the first response to calcium buildup. Never insert a screwdriver, pick, pressure-washer nozzle, wire brush, or other object between the blades; scratches can permanently reduce cell life.

Step 5: Prepare acid only when scale remains

If hard scale survives rinsing and the exact manual calls for an acid wash, move outdoors to ventilation and put on full protective equipment. For Plus/LT, remove the controller assembly as the manual's cell-disassembly instructions specify before acid cleaning; keep it dry and do not separate the main cell halves. Use the correct cleaning stand and acid-resistant plastic container. Never immerse the whole cell in acid. Measure the manual's exact water and acid amounts. Always add acid slowly to water—never water to acid—and never mix acid with chlorine, bleach, or another cleaner.

Step 6: Soak only as long as needed

Fill the correctly oriented cell only to the prescribed level and watch the bubbling. Pentair says to allow the blades to soak until bubbling or foaming stops and not to leave acid in IntelliChlor Plus or LT for more than 30 minutes. Use the shortest effective exposure. Keep your face away from fumes and never cap a reacting mixture in a sealed container.

Step 7: Empty safely and rinse thoroughly

Pour the solution back into the acid-resistant bucket as the manual directs and rinse the inside of the cell thoroughly with clean water. Reinspect without touching the blades. Follow the product label and local rules for neutralization, reuse, or disposal; never pour an unknown acid mixture into the pool, landscape, storm drain, or metal plumbing.

Step 8: Reinstall and correct the cause of scale

Complete the exact model's controller and seal reassembly first. Inspect and seat clean O-rings, reinstall the cell with the flow arrow correct, tighten unions evenly by the specified method, reconnect the dry cable, restore valves, and restart circulation before chlorination. Check for leaks and normal readings. Then test pool chemistry: repeated scale points to water-balance or flow issues that cleaning alone will not solve. Record the date to prevent needless repeat acid washing.
