How to Clean Petzl Crampons, Points and Binding Parts

Petzl crampons combine sharp steel or aluminum points with binding components, straps, linking bars and an antibott system. Routine care must remove moisture and salt while preserving point geometry and compatibility with the exact boot. Petzl’s technical notices require inspection, correct left/right assembly and a compatibility test; they also warn about sharp points and chemical exposure. This guide covers washing and inspection, not aggressive sharpening, heat treatment or modification of bindings. The intended boots belong in the final inspection because worn welts and changed adjustments can affect retention even when the metal is spotless. Keeping left and right units organized during cleaning also protects the required outside buckle position and asymmetric geometry.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Identify the model and wear cut-resistant gloves

Read the model and technical notice, noting steel versus aluminum construction, binding system, linking bar and antibott plate. Put on gloves and hold crampons by safer frame areas, never wrapping a palm around points. Separate left and right without changing adjustments yet. Chemical exposure, a major impact or unknown secondhand history needs inspection before washing. Do not assume Lynx, Irvis Hybrid and Leopard parts share the same compatibility or point-maintenance rule.

Step 2: Rinse snow, mud and salt promptly

Use fresh water to remove snowmelt chemicals, salt, mud and grit after use. Add mild soap only when ordinary soil needs it, then brush with a soft nylon tool away from your hand. Open straps and binding levers so trapped contamination can leave. Do not use acid rust removers, bleach or solvents around metal, plastic and webbing. Avoid pressure washing pivots and do not soak for days; prompt controlled cleaning is intended to limit corrosion and reveal condition.

Step 3: Clean bindings and antibott plates gently

Wipe toe bails, heel levers, straps, linking bars and the antibott system without dismantling pieces the technical notice does not list as user-removable. Brush ice and dirt from adjustment holes and moving interfaces. Do not oil straps, boot-contact areas or antibott plates. A cracked plastic plate, bent bail or slipping adjustment is a parts and compatibility issue. Cleaning must not change which holes, bars or front binding system were selected for the boot.

Step 4: Rinse completely and dry at once

Rinse away soap and particles with fresh water, shake off droplets carefully and towel the metal. Air-dry with points protected from people and textiles. Open moving pieces so water does not remain under a lever or inside a connection. Do not use an oven, flame or intense heater; heat can affect metal treatment, plastic and webbing. Never pack wet crampons against a rope, harness or tent fabric where rust, sharp points and moisture can cause secondary damage.

Step 5: Inspect points, frame and corrosion

After drying, check every point for cracks, severe rounding, bends and unequal damage. Inspect frame sections, rivets, linking bars and adjustment holes. Light surface oxidation differs from deep pitting or metal loss. Do not grind corrosion away or sharpen indiscriminately; model-specific sharpening preserves original point shape and avoids overheating. A deformed or deeply corroded part should be removed from service and assessed under Petzl’s inspection and replacement guidance.

Step 6: Inspect straps and binding security

Check webbing for cuts, chemical staining and damaged stitching, and make sure buckles and heel levers work smoothly. Inspect antibott plates for cracks and secure attachment. Reconfirm right and left orientation; Petzl notices state crampons are asymmetric and should not be swapped. Replace only with compatible Petzl components and follow the exact assembly diagram. Do not tie knots over a broken buckle or substitute hardware from another model because it appears to fit.

Step 7: Fit to the boots and perform compatibility tests

Adjust each clean dry crampon to the intended boot according to the notice. Confirm the front and rear bindings retain the welts and that the boot cannot shift upward, sideways or lengthwise. Perform the prescribed shaking or kicking test in a controlled location, then verify straps and buckles. Boot wear can change compatibility over time, so a prior fit is not permanent. Store dry with points covered, separated from textiles and without compressing plastic components.
