How to Clean a Philips Sonicare Toothbrush
Philips Sonicare handles are designed to tolerate routine rinsing, but the charger is not treated the same way and the flexible seal around the metal drive shaft should never be picked with a sharp tool. Toothpaste film typically forms under the removable head, around that seal and on the bottom of the handle. Philips recommends a quick clean after each use and a more detailed weekly cleaning that rinses the lower brush-head opening and metal-shaft area, then wipes the entire handle. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Rinse the bristles after every brushing
Switch the Sonicare off and rinse toothpaste from the bristles and neck with warm water. Run water across the bristle tufts rather than pressing them into the sink. Shake off loose droplets gently.
Step 2: Remove the brush head
Pull the head straight upward from the metal shaft. A small operating gap between the installed head and handle is normal, so do not try to eliminate it with tape or sealant. If residue makes removal stiff, wet the joint and use even pressure rather than twisting the shaft.
Step 3: Rinse the lower head opening
Hold the bottom of the brush head under warm water so softened paste exits the internal cavity. Rinse the outside neck as well. Do not insert a needle into the head or boil it; the drive insert and bristle anchors are not cleaned by heat.
Step 4: Rinse the metal-shaft area
Philips directs users to rinse the metal shaft area with warm water. Let water carry residue from the top surface and flexible seal. Do not press a fingernail, knife or dental pick beneath the seal, because damage there can allow future liquid entry.
Step 5: Wipe the whole handle weekly
Use a wet soft cloth around the top seal, buttons, grip and bottom of the toothbrush. Work on dried spots with repeated damp wiping rather than an abrasive pad. Keep the handle separate from the charger throughout cleaning.
Step 6: Clean the charger separately
Unplug the charging base and wipe its surface and cord with a damp cloth. Keep water away from the plug and do not rinse or immerse the charger. Dry the base before returning it to an outlet or placing the handle on it.
Step 7: Air-dry outside the shower
Stand the wiped handle and rinsed head upright with airflow around both pieces. Philips notes that Sonicare can be used in the shower, but it should not be stored there between brushings. A continuously humid enclosure slows drying and encourages film around the head joint.
Step 8: Reassemble and inspect
When the head opening and shaft are dry, slide the head straight onto the shaft and leave the normal small gap. Replace a head with splayed bristles, a cracked neck or a loose drive insert. Discontinue a charger with cord damage or a handle with a torn top seal.
