How to Clean a Roomba Combo j7+ and Clean Base
The Roomba Combo j7+ shares a bin with its mopping tank and automatically lifts its pad, so it has more maintenance points than a vacuum-only j7. Dust builds on the high-efficiency filter and dual rubber brushes, while damp residue can stay in the tank, pad, or pad-lift area. The Clean Base adds an evacuation port, bag, charging contacts, and infrared target that must stay dry and unobstructed. This guide is specific to Combo j7+; Combo j9+, Combo 10 Max, and newer Roomba series have different docks and tank capacities. iRobot's compatibility guide indicates the Combo j7+ filter is not the washable filter used by Essential models. Remove the robot from the dock, power it down, and never rinse its filter, camera, body, or Clean Base.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Send the robot home, then power it down
End the job, let the robot finish evacuation, remove it from the Clean Base, and power it down through the documented control. Set it on a towel. Do not service moving brushes or the pad arm while the robot can start from the app, a schedule, or its button.
Step 2: Remove and empty the Combo bin-tank
Press the bin-release button and slide out the combined bin and mopping tank. Empty dry debris over a trash can before opening the liquid cap. Pour out leftover approved solution and wipe the tank exterior. Do not tip liquid toward the filter, evacuation port, or robot-body opening.
Step 3: Clean the filter dry—do not rinse it
Remove the high-efficiency filter by its tab and tap it gently against a trash container. Use a soft dry brush only on loose surface dust. iRobot identifies the Combo j7+/j9+/10 Max filter as distinct from the washable Essential filter, so do not rinse, spray, or reinstall it damp. Replace it when airflow remains restricted or the app indicates.
Step 4: Rinse only the tank surfaces the guide permits
Keep the filter out. Rinse or wipe the bin-tank exactly as the Combo j7+ guide directs, avoiding the filter media and any valves not identified for washing. Use cool water and no household detergent inside the operating system. Dry the bin-tank completely before reinstalling the dry filter and close the fill cap securely.
Step 5: Remove and wash the mopping pad
Lift the pad plate and slide the pad from its slot. Rinse it thoroughly or machine-wash it only under iRobot's pad-care instructions, without fabric softener or bleach. Remove hair from the plate and inspect the pad arm for debris while it is in its normal accessible position. Do not force the actuator by hand.
Step 6: Clean the dual multi-surface rubber brushes
Turn the powered-down robot over on a soft surface, open the brush frame, and lift out both rollers. Remove the end caps, pull hair from the axles, and wipe the rubber treads. Return each cap and roller to its color- or shape-matched position. Do not wash the brush gearbox or run the robot without both rollers seated.
Step 7: Clear the edge brush and front caster
Remove hair wound around the edge-sweeping brush and its hub. Pull the front caster only if the guide shows the normal removal method, clean the wheel and axle, and press it back into place. Check that the drive wheels compress, spring back, and turn without pet hair binding their edges.
Step 8: Wipe the camera, sensors, contacts, and evacuation port
Use a clean dry microfiber cloth on the front camera window, cliff sensors, floor-tracking sensor, charging contacts, and dock target. Clear the robot's evacuation port with a dry tool. Avoid cleaners, polish, compressed air, and dripping cloths; a film on optical surfaces can impair navigation and obstacle detection.
Step 9: Maintain the Clean Base
Unplug the dock before wiping it. Replace its dirt-disposal bag when full rather than emptying and reusing it. Check the evacuation tube and port for a dry blockage, then wipe the charging contacts and infrared window. Never rinse the Clean Base, insert a wet tool, or allow mop water to pool at its electrical connector.
Step 10: Dry, refill correctly, and reassemble
Install the dry filter in the dry bin-tank, slide in a clean dry or properly dampened pad, and fill only with an iRobot-approved option for Combo j Series. iRobot allows just water or listed compatible solutions and warns against hot water and water-vinegar mixtures. Seat the bin, power on, and confirm normal docking before restoring schedules.
