How to Clean a Rowenta Focus DW5080 Iron
A Rowenta Focus DW5080 has two separate maintenance jobs: wiping the cooled soleplate and flushing deposits from the steam chamber with its self-clean function. Descaling it like a kettle by adding vinegar is not the same procedure. The model’s illustrated manual uses plain water, a controlled heating stage, an unplugged flush over the sink, then a brief reheating stage before final cooling. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Confirm the model and distinguish wiping from self-cleaning
Check the rating label for DW5080 and match the controls to the Rowenta Focus support page. Its illustrated manual shows the self-clean sequence on pages 10–11. Do not transfer removable anti-calc-valve soaking directions from another Rowenta iron to this model. If you only need to wipe the exterior, keep it unplugged and fully cool. The heating steps below belong specifically to the steam-chamber flush, not ordinary hand cleaning.
Step 2: Prepare the correct water with the iron unplugged
Set the steam control to Dry and unplug before filling. Use untreated tap water up to, but not beyond, the Max line. Rowenta permits an equal tap-water and distilled-water blend for very hard water; it does not recommend pure distilled water for this model. Do not use scented ironing water, water from a clothes dryer, softened water or a homemade descaling mixture. Close the filling inlet. Keep the plug, cord connection and handle area dry, and do not immerse the iron to fill or rinse it.
Step 3: Heat on the heel to the indicated maximum setting
Place the filled iron upright on its stable heel rest, connect it and select the maximum temperature shown in the manual. Keep steam set to Dry during this heating stage. Wait for the temperature indicator to show it has reached the setting rather than pressing self-clean immediately after switching on. Prepare the sink area before handling the hot iron so you are not searching for space with a full reservoir. Never rest the hot soleplate on a countertop, fabric pile or other surface that could be marked.
Step 4: Unplug and hold the self-clean control over the sink
Disconnect the plug before moving into the discharge stage. Hold the iron horizontally above the sink and operate the self-clean or anti-calc control exactly as the model diagram shows, for approximately one minute. Hot water, steam and loosened particles can exit through the soleplate. Keep your hands clear of the underside and do not aim it at clothing, people or pets. This is a water flush, not a powered soaking process. Do not open the housing or probe the steam chamber if the discharged particles look substantial.
Step 5: Complete the brief reheating stage, then cool completely
Release the self-clean control and return it to its normal position. The official diagram then shows reconnecting the iron and heating upright for about two minutes to clear remaining moisture, followed by unplugging and roughly an hour of cooling. Follow that sequence while keeping the iron attended. Do not skip directly from a hot flush to wiping the soleplate by hand. If your supplied DW5080 manual revision differs, follow its illustrated steps. The important boundary remains that the sink discharge occurs unplugged and final hand cleaning occurs cool.
Step 6: Wipe the soleplate without scraping its steam holes
When fully cool and unplugged, wipe the soleplate and exterior with a soft damp cloth or nonabrasive sponge. Remove loose fibers around the holes gently rather than digging into them with a pin or knife. Rowenta’s support guidance allows gentle vacuum removal of deposits from a cold soleplate where needed. Avoid metallic pads, abrasive powders and solvent cleaners. A stubborn burned-on mark is not a reason to scratch the metal. Inspect the surface under light before putting the iron onto a valuable garment again.
Step 7: Empty, store upright and check the cause of future streaks
Empty remaining water as directed, close the steam control, set the thermostat to minimum and store the cooled iron on its heel. Do not wind the cord around a hot soleplate. Rowenta recommends self-cleaning about every two weeks, or weekly with very hard water. If brown marks recur, review water type, starch use, laundry detergent residue and trapped fibers rather than assuming every stain comes from scale. Test normal operation on an appropriate spare cloth before returning to delicate clothing; a leaking or damaged iron needs more than repeated cleaning.
