How to Clean a Shark Rotator Lift-Away NV500

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Switch off and unplug

Set the vacuum to off, unplug the cord and wait for the brushroll to stop. Move it to a hard floor and use the normal releases for the wand and Lift-Away pod. Never clean a connected nozzle or reach into an inlet while the unit has power.

Step 2: Empty the dust cup before the MAX line

Release the cup from the pod and hold it over a trash container. Open the lower door for heavy debris and the upper door when needed to clear the internal screen. Close each door until it latches, and remove grit from the gasket surfaces.

Step 3: Clean the cup and screen conservatively

Use a dry cloth or soft brush on the shroud and screen. If the exact NV500 manual permits rinsing the detached dust cup, use water only and dry it completely; otherwise use a damp-cloth wipe. Never rinse the powered pod, motor inlet or electrical contacts.

Step 4: Remove foam and felt pre-motor filters

Lift the filter cover below the dust cup and remove the foam and felt pieces in order. Tap loose dust over a bin between washings as Shark suggests. Do not beat them against a hard edge, mix up their order or run the vacuum with either missing.

Step 5: Rinse washable pre-motor filters

Follow the NV500 manual's interval. Rinse model-approved foam and felt filters in cold water without soap until the water runs clear. Gently squeeze foam and press water from felt without twisting. Replace a torn, crumbling or permanently compressed filter.

Step 6: Service the post-motor HEPA filter separately

Open the exhaust cover and remove the HEPA filter by its tabs. Tap loose dust when appropriate and rinse only if the exact model guide calls it washable, using cold water and no soap. The HEPA interval is usually longer than pre-motor care and should not be guessed from another Shark series.

Step 7: Dry filters for at least 24 hours

Place washed filters in moving room air for 24 hours and longer if their centers or pleats remain cool. Never use a dryer, radiator, microwave, oven or hair dryer. A damp filter can damage the motor and rapidly become blocked by fine dust.

Step 8: Clear the brushroll and nozzle dry

Turn the unplugged floor nozzle over and cut wrapped thread along accessible brushroll grooves with blunt scissors. Pull fibers away from bristles, end caps and belts. Check the nozzle inlet, but do not remove service screws, soak the head or pour cleaner around the powered brushroll.

Step 9: Inspect hose, wand and pod airways

Detach the hose and wand using their normal latches and look through each against a light. Flex the hose gently and remove reachable debris from an end without a sharp rod. Check the floor-nozzle neck, pod inlet and dust-cup outlet, then wipe seals dry.

Step 10: Reassemble and test sealed airflow

Return only fully dry filters in their original order, lock the covers and seat the dust cup. Reconnect the hose, wand, pod and nozzle until each latch clicks. Test briefly on a suitable floor. If suction is weak or the brush stops, unplug and recheck airways and filter seating instead of removing filters to run it.
