Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Confirm brake model and fluid family
Find the caliper and lever model numbers and retrieve their Shimano manuals. This guide addresses Shimano hydraulic systems that use the specified Shimano mineral-oil family; Shimano warns not to mix oil types. Do not open bleed ports or remove pistons for routine cleaning. If the brake uses another maker or fluid, follow that system rather than borrowing this method.
Step 2: Cool the system and stabilize the bicycle
After riding, wait until rotor and caliper are cool. Shimano warns they can cause burns and that a rotating rotor can cut fingers. Switch an e-bike off and support the bicycle securely. Keep chain lubricant, aerosol, degreaser and dirty drivetrain rags away from the entire brake area before beginning.
Step 3: Inspect before washing
Look for fluid leakage, a lever that reaches the bar, cracked or deformed rotor, loose hardware, abnormal noise and damaged hoses. Shimano says not to use a brake with fluid leaking. Check pad and rotor thickness against the exact manual; the referenced user manual prohibits pads at 0.5 mm or less and rotors at 1.5 mm or less, or with visible aluminum.
Step 4: Keep the wheel installed when possible
Routine exterior cleaning usually does not require wheel removal. If removal is necessary, install the correct pad spacer and do not squeeze the brake lever. Shimano warns that an unspaced lever pull can extend pistons. Do not touch pad faces or rotor braking tracks with bare fingers, which can leave oil contamination.
Step 5: Prepare mild soapy water
Mix a small amount of mild soap with clean water. Shimano's official instruction is soapy water and a dry cloth. Do not substitute automotive brake cleaner, aerosol “disc silencer,” strong degreaser or penetrating oil; Shimano says those substances can damage seals. Use tools dedicated to brakes, not a bucket contaminated by drivetrain lubricant.
Step 6: Clean caliper and lever exteriors
Dampen a cloth or soft brush rather than flooding the component. Wipe the caliper body, hose exterior and lever, keeping grit away from seals and electrical ports. On carbon levers, Shimano calls for a soft cloth and neutral detergent. Do not force water into lever pivots, E-TUBE connections or a damaged hose and do not pressure-wash the bicycle.
Step 7: Clean rotor surfaces without contamination
With the wheel stationary and cool, wipe the rotor carefully using fresh soapy water and a dedicated cloth, keeping fingers clear of sharp cutouts. Rinse with a clean damp cloth, then dry thoroughly. Never apply polish, lubricant or a silencing compound. A rotor with persistent oil contamination, deep scoring, crack or deformation should be evaluated for replacement.
Step 8: Dry, reassemble and check operation
Dry all components with clean lint-free cloths and allow hidden moisture to evaporate. If the wheel was removed, reinstall it by the wheel manual and remove the spacer before operating the lever. Confirm the rotor runs through the caliper, the lever feels firm and there is no leak. Do not ride to “burn off” uncertain oil contamination.
Step 9: Perform a controlled brake test
Test each brake at walking speed in a traffic-free area. Braking should be predictable without a lever reaching the bar. New pads or rotors require Shimano's bed-in procedure; cleaning alone does not. Stop riding for reduced power, persistent squeal after contamination, rubbing, pulsing, fluid leakage or uncertain thickness and have a qualified mechanic inspect the system.
