How to Clean a SHOEI Motorcycle Helmet

A SHOEI helmet is protective equipment made from materials that cannot share one cleaner. SHOEI allows plastic cleaner or wax on a gloss shell but excludes vents and other plastic parts; matte shells use mild detergent and water with no polish. Removable comfort padding can be washed at 30°C with neutral cleaner, while the EPS impact liner gets only a damp-cloth wipe because it is vulnerable to solvents, heat, scratches and dents. Shields and Pinlock components must be removed and completely dry before reassembly. Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Inspect before cleaning

Do not clean away evidence of damage. Check shell, strap, buckle, EPS and shield for impact marks, cracks, dents, separation or deterioration. SHOEI recommends replacement after an impact, when the retention system or EPS has deteriorated, and five years after first retail purchase even without those signs.

Step 2: Remove parts exactly as the manual shows

Wash hands, place the helmet on a soft towel and follow the model manual for shield, Pinlock insert, cheek pads, center pad and chinstrap covers. Do not pry vents or pull bonded EPS. Organize fasteners and photograph pad orientation so safety and airflow parts return correctly.

Step 3: Clean the shell by finish

For a gloss shell, SHOEI permits compatible plastic cleaner or wax on the shell but not on ventilation sliders or other plastic pieces. A matte shell should receive only mild detergent and water, with no polish. Soften insects with a damp cloth instead of scraping decals or paint.

Step 4: Clean vents and plastic parts gently

Use water or a mild neutral cleaner. SHOEI warns that solvents, petrochemicals, acidic or alkaline corrosive agents and window cleaner can penetrate plastic and increase breakage risk. Use a soft toothbrush or cotton swab for stubborn dirt, never a pick that can gouge or dislodge a vent.

Step 5: Wash the shield and Pinlock separately

Use mild neutral soap and water as the exact manuals direct. Rinse with pure water and wipe or blot with a soft cloth. Avoid hot water, salt water, glass cleaner and organic solvent. Treat an anti-fog Pinlock surface very gently and do not reassemble it until shield and insert are absolutely dry.

Step 6: Wash removable comfort padding

SHOEI allows hand washing or a machine cycle at 30°C (86°F) with neutral cleaner and a washing bag for removable comfort-liner parts. Follow the specific pad label and use gentle action. Fixed padding should be wiped with a damp cloth and neutral cleaner rather than soaked.

Step 7: Protect the EPS impact liner

Wipe EPS only with a damp cloth. Do not use solvent, steam, disinfectant spray, brush, compressed air or heat. Never press a dent flat, remove EPS for washing or scrape its painted surface. White scratches, breakup, melting, separation or indentations are reasons for SHOEI inspection or replacement.

Step 8: Air-dry every part

Set components in moving room-temperature air away from sun, radiator, hair dryer and other heat. Pads can feel dry outside while foam remains damp, so allow extra time. SHOEI requires everything to be absolutely dry before padding and Pinlock parts go back into the shell.

Step 9: Reassemble and fit-check

Use the manual to click every pad, shield pivot and Pinlock component into place. Confirm vents and shield operate normally and the strap is not twisted. Put the helmet on, fasten the retention system and check its fit. Loose padding or abnormal rotation can indicate retirement rather than a cleaning issue.
