Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Knock out snow without wiping the wet interior

Hold the frame, not the lens, and shake or tap loose powder away. If snow is inside, let it fall out rather than smearing it across the anti-fog surface. Smith warns that rubbing the wet or fogged interior can wipe away its coating and worsen future fogging.

Step 2: Let fog and ice soften naturally

Move indoors or to a sheltered place and allow ice to melt at room temperature. Do not scrape with a fingernail, lift frozen snow with a card or hold the goggles against a heater. Heat can distort the lens, frame and foam and can drive moisture into the dual-lens space.

Step 3: Blot exterior water

Use a Smith Snow Eraser, the supplied microfiber bag or another clean lint-free microfiber cloth. Blot snowmelt and then wipe the exterior lens gently. Keep the cloth free of grit; a cloth carried loose in a pocket can collect particles that scratch mirror finish.

Step 4: Protect the inner anti-fog surface

Avoid touching the interior lens. If droplets remain and cannot air-dry conveniently, Smith says to dab the inside gently without rubbing. Use a fresh dry section for each dab and stop if the surface is still fogged or soft with moisture.

Step 5: Remove exterior fingerprints

When the lens is dry, use light circular or straight strokes with clean microfiber on the exterior only. Smith's 4D MAG care says not to use chemicals or abrasive materials. Do not apply household glass cleaner, alcohol, lens tissue with unknown treatment or paper towel.

Step 6: Clean frame and foam separately

Use a soft dry brush on the frame exterior and blot damp foam with a clean towel. Do not saturate face foam, twist the frame or scrub adhesive seams. Sweat-soaked foam needs open-air drying rather than fragranced spray that can contact skin and lens coatings.

Step 7: Remove a 4D MAG lens only as directed

For a deeper frame clean, follow Smith's 4D MAG sequence: locate the latch behind the strap outrigger, release it and guide the lens tabs out without flexing the lens. Other Smith systems use different latches. Never force a magnetic lens that still has a locked mechanical tab.

Step 8: Air-dry all parts completely

Set goggles and any removed lens in a ventilated room away from sun, radiator, hair dryer and open flame. Position them so air reaches face foam and both sides of a removed lens without resting a coated surface on a hard object. Do not store until every part is dry.

Step 9: Reinstall and protect

Guide tabs into the frame and apply only the light pressure Smith describes until every latch seats. Inspect the lens gap, outriggers and strap. Put the dry goggles in their microfiber bag and protective case, separate from gloves, tools and wet gear.
