How to Clean a SRAM AXS Drivetrain Safely
A SRAM AXS drivetrain combines an electronic derailleur and removable battery with a chain, cassette and chainring that need mechanical cleaning and lubrication. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the AXS generation and chain system
Confirm whether the bike has road AXS, Eagle AXS, Transmission, XPLR or another generation and retrieve its manuals. Chain construction, PowerLock rules, wear limits and derailleur service parts differ. Note a waxed chain, which needs its own approved cleaning path. Do not apply conventional liquid lube to a hot-wax system without intentionally converting it.
Step 2: Power down, remove battery and fit the red block
Switch off e-bike assistance if present, stabilize the bike and remove the AXS derailleur battery. Inspect it for cracks, swelling, heat or damaged contacts and keep it in a dry clean location. SRAM directs installation of the red battery block before washing. Do not leave the exposed battery interface open to spray or substitute tape that can trap moisture.
Step 3: Shield brakes and remove loose dirt
Cover rotors and pads so degreaser, soap and chain lubricant cannot reach them. Use a damp cloth, as SRAM directs, to lift dirt from the derailleur body, controls and accessible frame area. Brush dry mud from pulley cages without forcing the derailleur sideways. Stop for a bent hanger, impact crack, loose cage or exposed wire rather than washing a damaged system.
Step 4: Wash electronic components gently
Clean the protected AXS electronic parts with mild soap and water. SRAM warns that harsh degreasers can damage seals. Put solution on a cloth or soft brush and work around the derailleur exterior without opening it. Avoid direct pressure washing, battery contacts, unprotected ports and deliberate submersion even though the system is designed for wet-weather riding.
Step 5: Clean chain and cassette with compatible chemistry
Use only biodegradable or drivetrain-specific cleaner allowed for the chain and cassette. SRAM separately warns against acidic or alkaline solvent and against prolonged soaking that can make components brittle. Apply in control, agitate the chain rollers and cassette teeth and keep runoff from hubs, bottom bracket, motor, suspension and brakes.
Step 6: Rinse thoroughly without pressure
Use gentle water to remove all soap and cleaner. Do not aim a jet at derailleur pivots, pulley bearings, battery interface, bottom bracket or hubs. Turn the crank by hand while keeping fingers and clothing clear. The red block should stay installed through washing and rinsing so the electrical interface remains protected.
Step 7: Dry every component and contact area
Wipe the drivetrain and allow it to air-dry. Run the chain through a clean cloth until no water emerges from rollers. Remove the red block only after surrounding parts are dry, then inspect the block and battery contacts with a dry cloth. Do not use compressed air or heat to force drying and never reinstall a wet, corroded or damaged battery.
Step 8: Lubricate the chain and wipe excess
Apply compatible lubricant one small drop per roller or by the product method. Allow penetration, then wipe the outside until it feels nearly dry. SRAM's cleaning sequence ends with lubrication and removal of excess. Lubricant belongs inside the chain rollers, not on electronic parts, cassette faces, brake surfaces or tire tread.
Step 9: Reinstall battery and test shifting
Fit the dry battery until it locks, wake the system and shift through gears on a stand. Check chain wear by the exact SRAM threshold; the referenced AXS guide discusses replacement at 0.8 percent for its covered systems, but the component manual controls. Do not ride if shifting is erratic, a derailleur is bent, an error persists or brake contamination is suspected.
