How to Clean a Tempur-Pedic Mattress and Cover

Step 1: Identify the mattress and cover before cleaning

Find the product name and read the sewn-in care label. A zipper alone does not prove that a cover can be washed; on some mattresses it exists for manufacturing or service. Tempur-Pedic identifies removable washable covers on current ProAdapt, LuxeAdapt, ProBreeze, LuxeBreeze, and ActiveBreeze models, but says TEMPUR-Cloud and TEMPUR-Adapt covers are spot-clean only. If your model, cover, or tag differs, let its exact instructions control.

Step 2: Strip the bed and inspect the affected area

Remove sheets, protector, and washable bedding. Note whether soil is only on the cover or has passed into the TEMPUR material. Photograph the care label before removing a cover so its instructions stay available. If the mattress is wet from a large spill, keep pressure off the area; weight can drive liquid farther into the foam.

Step 3: Remove dry surface debris gently

Use a clean upholstery attachment on low suction to lift crumbs, hair, and loose dust from the cover. Keep the nozzle moving and avoid pulling at knit fabric, seams, cooling fibers, or zipper tape. Vacuuming is optional and should be skipped if the cover tag discourages it or the fabric is damaged.

Step 4: Blot a fresh spill without rubbing

Press a clean absorbent cloth onto the spill, lift it, and repeat with dry sections. Tempur-Pedic advises blotting rather than rubbing. Work from the outside toward the center so the wet area does not spread. Do not pour water, vinegar, peroxide, enzyme cleaner, steam, or upholstery shampoo into the mattress. The goal is to transfer moisture out, not dilute it inside the TEMPUR material.

Step 5: Wash a manufacturer-approved removable cover

If the tag confirms machine washing, remove the cover slowly without tugging foam or forcing the zipper around corners. Close zippers if the tag directs it and wash in cold water with mild detergent. Do not use bleach or harsh stain removers. Tempur-Pedic's general care guidance favors hanging the cover to dry; some current model guidance permits cool machine drying. Follow the sewn-in tag when those instructions differ.

Step 6: Spot-clean a nonwashable cover

For TEMPUR-Cloud, TEMPUR-Adapt, or any cover labeled spot clean only, keep it on the mattress unless the exact instructions say otherwise. Put a tiny amount of mild detergent in cool water, dampen a cloth, and wring it very well. Blot the mark, then blot with a second barely damp cloth to lift residue. Never saturate the fabric or allow liquid to pool at a seam.

Step 7: Dry the cover and mattress completely

Keep the mattress uncovered and direct a fan across—not into—the damp area. Tempur-Pedic recommends air circulation for a spill and warns never to soak TEMPUR material. Do not use a hair dryer, iron, heating pad, or direct high heat. A washable cover must also be fully dry before installation; damp fabric zipped around foam can trap odor and moisture.

Step 8: Refit the cover without compressing or tearing it

Orient the dry cover correctly, align corners, and close the zipper a little at a time while supporting the fabric. Do not kneel on the zipper path or pull hard against resistance. Reinstall only the pieces designed for owner removal. Add clean bedding after the mattress surface and room have no damp or cleaning-product odor.

Step 9: Escalate deep contamination instead of soaking

Urine, flooding, vomit, or another large spill may penetrate farther than safe surface cleaning can reach. Because the TEMPUR core cannot be saturated, repeated wet treatments can worsen the problem.
