How to Clean a Tesla Cybertruck Stainless Steel Exterior
A bare-stainless Cybertruck exterior does not have the same clear-coated finish as a conventional painted car. Routine washing, fingerprint spot cleaning, and removal of iron-containing surface contamination are therefore separate decisions. This guide follows Tesla's current Cybertruck owner and DIY instructions for unwrapped stainless panels, not vinyl wraps or aftermarket coatings. It also keeps the metal-panel methods away from camera lenses, exterior lights, and other materials. Start by rinsing off grit and using a mild pH-neutral car shampoo; only move to a specialized treatment when the type of contamination and the manufacturer's procedure are clear.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Prepare the vehicle and identify the surface
Park safely out of direct sunlight, stop charging, close the windows and charge port, and make sure the wipers are off. Confirm that the area to be cleaned is bare stainless rather than wrap, painted trim, a camera lens, or a light. Check for loose trim or damage before wiping. Tesla does not recommend automatic car washes for Cybertruck; this guide uses hand washing. If a wash facility is unavoidable, follow Tesla's current Car Wash Mode instructions and the facility's compatibility requirements rather than assuming the vehicle can use any conveyor.
Step 2: Flush grit and road salt before touching panels
Rinse away loose dirt with a hose, including mud around wheel wells and panel seams. Remove road salt from the underside, wheel wells, and brakes without directing water into vulnerable openings. Do not drag a dry cloth through a layer of sand or dried mud. Tesla specifies at least 12 inches / 30 cm separation if a pressure washer is used, with the nozzle kept moving. Keep jets away from seals, exposed wiring, electronics, and the charge port; never direct high-velocity water there while the vehicle is charging.
Step 3: Hand-wash with mild pH-neutral car shampoo
Mix the suitable shampoo according to its label and wash using a soft sponge, rinsing the tool frequently so it does not retain grit. Tesla warns against acidic, highly alkaline, caustic, and hydroxide-containing products for ordinary exterior washing. Do not treat stainless durability as permission to use a kitchen scourer or oven cleaner across the truck. Work in manageable areas and rinse before soap dries. Plastic trim, lights, and camera surfaces can be damaged by a product that someone recommends only for an exposed stainless panel.
Step 4: Rinse thoroughly and dry with clean microfiber
Rinse off the soap with clean water, then dry with clean microfiber cloths free of sand or hard particles. Tesla's Cybertruck instructions describe circular drying motions and rotating clean cloths as needed; do not assume every stainless appliance's grain-following polish routine applies unchanged. Use a clean section as the cloth becomes wet or dirty. Check seams for retained grime without pushing sharp tools into them. Some gradual change in reflectivity or color is normal aging of the stainless exterior, not automatically a cleaning failure.
Step 5: Spot-clean fingerprints on stainless only
For small stains on the stainless panels, Tesla permits isopropyl-alcohol wipes, and its panel spot-cleaning guidance also describes glass cleaner with microfiber. Keep these treatments controlled and away from incompatible surfaces. In particular, Tesla says not to use alcohol or ethyl alcohol on the headlights or taillights. A stainless-panel permission does not apply to the camera lenses either. If a greasy mark will not lift with the approved spot method, consult the full owner guidance rather than escalating to an arbitrary solvent, abrasive polish, or a tool that changes the metal's finish.
Step 6: Use the specific surface-contamination procedure when justified
Orange or brown spots can be iron-containing debris on the stainless surface, which Tesla distinguishes from rusting body panels. Its surface-contamination procedure starts with IPA spot cleaning. If ineffective, it specifies a clean dry panel, gloves, CitriSurf 77 or an equivalent mild citric-acid cleaner, about three minutes of contact, and only the specified blue Scotch-Brite Non-Scratch pad for gentle removal, followed by water rinsing and microfiber drying. Read both labels first: this narrow procedure can alter color locally and is not a general acid-washing permission.
Step 7: Finish with cameras, lights, and damage checks
Clean camera lenses using Tesla's separate water-and-microfiber method, not the stainless-panel chemical or pad. Make sure lights and views are unobstructed, and check that no cleaner has remained on nearby trim. After washing, Tesla directs drying the brakes with a short safe drive and repeated brake applications. Do not attempt to erase a deep scratch by ordinary cleaning: without a clear coat, a scratch may be in the stainless itself and refinishing is a separate repair process. Seek Tesla's assessment for persistent corrosion-like damage, loose trim, or an uncertain surface defect.
