How to Clean and Oil Wahl Hair Clippers
Most traditional Wahl home haircut clippers have steel blades that should be brushed and oiled, not rinsed under a faucet. That distinction matters because removable plastic guards are washable while the motor housing and standard blade set are not. Hair packed behind the moving blade increases heat and drag; too much oil, however, carries clippings back into the housing and onto the next haircut. This guide covers common corded and cordless Wahl haircut clippers with fixed or screw-mounted blades. A model explicitly marked washable may have different instructions, so its manual controls. The routine below keeps water away from conventional blades, places oil where Wahl specifies and preserves blade alignment.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Disconnect power and remove attachments
Switch the clipper off. Unplug a corded model or disconnect the charger from a cordless model. Slide off the guide comb and any ear taper. Let a hot blade cool before handling it; cleaning oil and compacted hair from a moving or energized blade risks both cuts and misalignment.
Step 2: Brush the exposed blade set
Hold the clipper with the blade pointing downward so loosened hair falls away from the housing. Brush across the teeth, between the moving and stationary blade, and around the taper-lever opening. Move the lever through its range to expose different surfaces. Do not use water on a conventional Wahl blade set.
Step 3: Clean behind removable blades only as instructed
If the model has a snap-off blade, release it using the manual's method and brush the drive area. If it has screws, routine cleaning usually does not require removal. Before loosening screws, note the blade overlap and side-to-side alignment; an incorrectly reinstalled moving blade can project beyond the stationary teeth.
Step 4: Wash guide combs separately
Wash plastic guards in warm water with a little mild dish soap. Use the brush to clear hair from the slots, rinse and lay each guard out until completely dry. Do not reinstall a damp guard on an oiled steel blade, where hidden moisture can encourage corrosion.
Step 5: Apply the correct amount of clipper oil
With the clean blade attached, place a drop at the left corner, right corner and center or heel positions shown by Wahl. Point the clipper downward and switch it on for several seconds so oil spreads between the blades. Keep fingers and cloth away from the moving teeth.
Step 6: Remove excess oil
Switch off and wipe only the excess that collects on the blade exterior. The teeth should retain a very thin film, not drip. Household penetrating oil, cooking oil and heavy grease do not replace Wahl blade oil; they can gum up, smell or irritate skin.
Step 7: Wipe the housing and cord
Use a dry or barely damp cloth on the clipper body, taper lever and cord. Keep moisture out of vents, screw holes, the power switch and charging socket. Avoid aerosol disinfectant overspray unless the exact product and clipper instructions approve its use on the blade surface.
Step 8: Test and store
Run the clipper briefly. The blade should sound even, move freely and remain correctly aligned. Store it switched off with the blade guard installed in a dry case, without tightly winding the cord around the housing. Brush and oil again before storage after cutting damp hair.
