How to Clean Xbox Series X|S and Its Controller
Xbox Series X and Series S consoles move a large volume of air, while Xbox Wireless Controllers collect oil and debris around grips, buttons, sticks, triggers, seams, and ports. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Shut down, unplug, and remove batteries
Power the console down fully, disconnect its AC cord from the outlet and console, and unplug HDMI, Ethernet, storage, and USB accessories. Let the console cool. Disconnect the controller, remove disposable batteries or the rechargeable battery pack, and close the empty battery compartment so debris does not fall inside.
Step 2: Dry-wipe the console first
Use a clean lint-free cloth on the Series X tower or Series S cabinet, front controls, and base. A dry pass removes grit before any damp cleaning and reduces the chance of creating streaks. Move dust away from the large circular exhaust and other vents rather than pushing it between openings.
Step 3: Wipe compatible console surfaces with approved IPA
Microsoft allows an isopropyl alcohol solution or prep pad containing 70% or less IPA on Xbox consoles, applied with a soft lint-free cloth. Lightly dampen the cloth rather than spraying the console. Wipe the exterior cabinet and immediately use a dry section. Keep the cloth from dripping into the Series X top vent, Series S grille, buttons, seams, ports, and disc slot.
Step 4: Clear vent dust without opening the console
With power disconnected, use a clean dry soft brush to lift loose surface dust from vent edges while holding or positioning the console so debris falls away. Do not insert the brush deeply, pour cleaner into a grille, or remove console panels. Microsoft says to keep the console in a well-ventilated, uncluttered, relatively cool location rather than attempting internal cleaning.
Step 5: Clean ports and the disc area dry
Wipe around HDMI, USB, Ethernet, expansion-card, power, and storage connectors with a dry cloth. Use a dry brush only at the outer rim if loose dust is visible. Never put a swab, metal object, or liquid inside a port or disc slot. If a connection shows corrosion, bent parts, burning, or looseness, arrange service.
Step 6: Wipe the standard Xbox Wireless Controller
Microsoft's controller troubleshooting guidance recommends a soft lint-free cloth dampened with a little mild soap and water. Wring the cloth nearly dry and wipe grips, face, back, battery cover, touch surfaces, buttons, sticks, bumpers, and triggers. Do not spray, immerse, or let moisture wick around controls or into the headset and USB ports.
Step 7: Clean around sticks and buttons
Rotate each stick and press each button while using a clean, nearly dry edge of cloth around its perimeter. Follow with a dry soft brush so loosened debris falls outward. Do not use a pin, toothpick, oil, or a dripping swab. A control that still sticks, repeats input, or fails after exterior cleaning requires troubleshooting or repair rather than more liquid.
Step 8: Treat special controllers as separate products
Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, Xbox Adaptive Controller, third-party pads, and custom finishes can have different approved products. Microsoft's care page lists controller-specific options, so verify the exact model before substituting IPA, glass cleaner, or another disinfectant. Never assume the console's 70%-or-less IPA rule automatically applies to every accessory.
Step 9: Dry and reassemble
Use a second dry microfiber cloth on the console and controller. Leave the controller battery compartment open nearby until every seam and contact area is dry, then reinstall the battery or pack. Reconnect the console only after the vents, ports, cabinet, cable ends, and work surface are dry.
Step 10: Restore airflow
Place Series X vertically or horizontally only in a supported orientation and leave its vents unobstructed. Keep either Series X or Series S out of a closed cabinet, away from direct heat, and off long-fiber carpet. Do not stack objects on the main exhaust. Regular exterior dusting is safer than waiting for a heavy layer to build.
