How to Freshwater Flush a Yamaha Outboard
Freshwater flushing removes salt, sand, silt and mud from Yamaha outboard cooling passages, but the three Yamaha methods have opposite engine rules. The built-in freshwater attachment is used with the engine off. A properly filled flush bag or correctly fitted muffs require the engine to run, with water established before starting and shut off only after the engine stops. Yamaha also says not to rev on muffs and notes that multi-inlet lower units may need the bag method. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the lower-unit inlet design
Record the outboard model and read its flushing section. Count cooling-water inlets and locate any built-in freshwater connector. Yamaha describes three methods—built-in attachment, flush bag and muffs—but not every model accepts each one. Multi-inlet designs may require a bag. Do not cover only some inlets with improvised cups or assume another horsepower family has the same sequence.
Step 2: Secure the boat and protect people
Shift to neutral, remove loose lines and establish a clear zone around the propeller and exhaust. Trailer or lift methods need stable support and drainage. Never work in an enclosed space; exhaust contains carbon monoxide. Keep children, pets and bystanders away, and do not touch the lower unit or moving parts while the engine runs.
Step 3: Rinse and inspect inlet screens
With the engine off, remove loose weed, mud and shells from water-intake screens using fresh water and a soft brush. Yamaha says screens should be kept clear. Do not poke debris deeper, bend a screen or run an engine with a visibly blocked inlet. A missing screen, fishing line at the prop shaft or impact damage needs inspection before flushing.
Step 4: Use the built-in attachment with engine off
For a model with the Yamaha freshwater flush fitting, connect the hose exactly as shown, often near the lower rear cowling. Yamaha explicitly says not to run the engine with this method. Position the outboard as the manual directs, turn on clean water and flush for the prescribed duration. Refit the connector cap securely after water is off.
Step 5: Use a flush bag only after it is full
Choose a bag sized for the lower unit, position it by its instructions and fill it until the gearcase and all inlets are properly submerged. Yamaha says a bag method requires engine operation, but only after the bag is filled. Maintain water level and never let exhaust or pump flow empty the bag. Follow the model's idle speed and time without leaving the helm.
Step 6: Use muffs only on compatible single-inlet models
Fit both cups squarely over the inlet and connect the hose. Yamaha says muffs are for models with single-inlet lower units and are used with the boat out of the water. Turn fresh water on before starting the engine. Verify the cups stay sealed and water supply remains constant. Do not use muffs as a partial cover on a multi-inlet design.
Step 7: Keep a running flush at idle
Yamaha warns not to rev while using flush muffs because available flow may not cool the engine at high rpm. Remain at the controls and watch the cooling telltale and temperature warnings. Never run with little or no cooling water. If flow is absent, the engine alarms, the bag level drops or the muffs move, stop immediately.
Step 8: Stop the engine before stopping water
For muff or bag methods, Yamaha's sequence is water on before engine start, then engine off before water off. This prevents a dry-running interval. Allow moving parts to stop, close the supply and remove the device. For the built-in attachment, remember that the engine has remained off throughout. Never blend the sequences.
Step 9: Drain, reconnect and document concerns
Return the motor to the manual's draining and storage position, reconnect the flush cap and rinse external salt. Do not seal a wet cowling if ventilation is required. Flush after every saltwater or dirty-water use as Yamaha recommends. Arrange service for weak telltale flow, repeated overheating, unusual deposits, damaged screens or a cooling passage that flushing does not clear.
