How to Wash Levi's Jeans Without Fading or Shrinking
Levi's denim does not need to be washed after every wear. Levi's suggests about ten wears as a general starting point unless jeans are visibly dirty or smell, with spot cleaning between washes. When a full wash is needed, cold water, an inside-out garment, a gentle cycle, and air drying help limit dye loss, fiber wear, and shrinkage. New dark denim can transfer indigo, while raw and Shrink-to-Fit denim respond differently from ordinary preshrunk jeans, so the inside care label and product type come first. This guide covers standard Levi's cotton and stretch jeans, with separate decisions for raw denim and Shrink-to-Fit products. It does not treat freezing as cleaning: freezing may suppress odor briefly, but it does not remove body oil, dirt, or stains.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify regular, stretch, raw, or Shrink-to-Fit denim
Read the sewn care label. Standard preshrunk jeans, stretch denim with elastane, raw denim, and Shrink-to-Fit jeans should not be treated as identical. Raw denim is especially sensitive to early fading and shape change, while Shrink-to-Fit is designed around controlled shrinkage. Follow the exact garment label if it differs from general Levi's guidance.
Step 2: Decide whether a full wash is necessary
Brush away dry dirt, air the jeans, and spot-clean a small mark when the rest of the garment is fresh. Levi's gives about ten wears as a general washing interval, not a deadline. Wash sooner after heavy sweat, food, mud, or odor. Fewer appropriate washes preserve color and fibers better than frequent unnecessary cycles.
Step 3: Blot and pretreat stains
Lift solids, blot liquid from the outside inward, and test a little gentle detergent on an inside seam. Work the diluted detergent into the mark with fingers or a soft brush, then allow only a short dwell. Do not scrub aggressively, use chlorine bleach on colored denim, or put a stained garment in the dryer before confirming the mark is gone.
Step 4: Prepare the jeans and the load
Empty every pocket, close the zipper, fasten the button, and turn the jeans inside out. Wash dark or new denim alone or with similarly dark items because indigo can transfer, especially during early washes. Keep lint-producing towels and abrasive hardware out of the load. Wash only a few heavy garments so the drum can move them freely.
Step 5: Machine-wash standard jeans cold and gently
Select cold water and a gentle or delicate cycle. Add a modest dose of gentle detergent; extra detergent can remain in dense seams and attract soil. Avoid chlorine bleach and routine fabric softener. A slower spin reduces creasing and abrasion, but the jeans will leave the washer heavier and require more air-drying time.
Step 6: Hand-wash raw denim when color preservation is the priority
Levi's raw-denim guidance recommends cold water and a gentle cleanser. Submerge the inside-out jeans in a clean basin, move them slowly through the solution, and rinse without hard agitation. Do not wring. Press out water with your hands, then roll the jeans in a clean towel to remove additional moisture without twisting the legs.
Step 7: Treat Shrink-to-Fit jeans according to the intended fit
Levi's recommends inside-out cold washing and air drying when the goal is to manage shrinkage and preserve the denim's character. If you are intentionally using an initial soak or wash to establish fit, follow the specific Shrink-to-Fit instructions for that product and size. Do not repeatedly use hot water or high heat unless the exact fitting process calls for it.
Step 8: Air-dry in shape
Remove jeans promptly, shake out deep folds, straighten pockets and seams, and hang from the waistband or lay them over a sturdy rack. Keep dark denim out of harsh direct sun. Air drying limits heat shrinkage and elastane damage. If the label permits a dryer, use the lowest practical heat and remove while slightly damp, but air drying is the more conservative default.
Step 9: Check color, fit, and stains before storage
Wait until the waistband, fly, pockets, and folded hems are dry. Inspect stains in daylight before adding heat on a future cycle. Stretch jeans may feel firm immediately after air drying and relax during wear. Store only when fully dry; trapped moisture in stacked denim can produce a musty odor.
Step 10: Reduce future dye transfer and wear
Wash dark denim before pairing it with pale upholstery or accessories when Levi's advises an initial wash, and use extra care when new denim is wet. Rotate jeans between wears, address spots early, and repair a small opening before washing enlarges it. Persistent dye transfer is a property of excess surface indigo, not something to fix with bleach or aggressive scrubbing.
