How to Clean a Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner

Step 1: Resolve the model and recall check first

Read the rating label on the underside only when the unit is cool and safe to handle. The February 26, 2026 CPSC notice covers model DUP020WNA with batch/date codes 0118-01 through 0425-05. Stop using affected units and follow Dupray's recall process for the free replacement safety boiler cap. If the label cannot be read or the repair status is uncertain, ask Dupray to identify the unit before another heating cycle. The remaining steps apply only when the machine is cleared for use.

Step 2: Switch off, unplug and let pressure and heat dissipate

Finish the cleaning session, switch the unit off and unplug it. Follow the Neat shutdown instructions for releasing remaining steam through the trigger, directed safely away from people, animals and heat-sensitive materials. Let the appliance and attachments cool completely before handling them or opening the boiler. For a maintenance session, do not rush to the shorter refill interval or use a clock alone as proof that a cap is safe to open. Never force a resistant cap with pliers, work on a pressurized boiler or remove an attachment while steam is issuing.

Step 3: Remove and wash the microfiber accessories

Detach the cooled pad, cloth or bonnet rather than leaving dirty fabric attached to the floor tool. The Dupray Neat instruction manual, revision v18 (manufacturer document hosted by a manual archive) allows machine washing its microfiber pads with liquid detergent. Wash separately from lint-shedding textiles, and avoid bleach and fabric softener. Air-dry the pads; the manual also permits its stated low-heat or air-dry machine setting. Inspect the fastener strips before reuse so a clean pad remains secured to the tool.

Step 4: Clean the cooled tool surfaces and attachment joints

Remove loose hair and grit from the floor-tool underside and wipe accessible attachment surfaces with a clean damp cloth. Keep removable pieces separate while they dry, and inspect their release buttons and mating ends for lodged debris. Do not force a metal pick through the steam hose or enlarge a nozzle opening. A split tool, damaged latch or blocked hose should be addressed through the appropriate replacement or service route. Clean bathroom and kitchen accessories separately to avoid simply moving residue between them, and keep abrasive brass brushes identified apart from softer nylon brushes.

Step 5: Drain the cold boiler without adding chemicals

Use the draining procedure supplied for your Neat and its current cap. Once it is fully cold and depressurized, open the cap as directed and pour the remaining water into a sink while supporting the unit securely and keeping the cord dry. Dupray's general FAQ describes a cold boiler drain around every 20 hours and before several months of nonuse; the Neat manual also instructs emptying before storage. Follow the model-specific and recall-remedy instructions where they are more restrictive. Do not remove the casing to chase a small residual amount of water or attempt to scrub the boiler's interior.

Step 6: Use clean water and avoid outdated descaling recipes

Dupray's current water guidance says not to put chemicals in the water tank or boiler, and recommends distilled water to prevent mineral accumulation. Do not add vinegar, descaler, detergent, essential oils or fragrance as part of this procedure. Older online Neat instructions can conflict with current water-only guidance; obtain an updated model-specific answer from Dupray if deposits or reduced performance remain. Rinsing or draining is not a repair for corrosion, leakage or a pressure-control problem, and a replacement cap does not justify ignoring other visible damage.

Step 7: Dry the exterior and store the components separately

Wipe the unplugged housing with a soft, lightly damp cloth and dry it without immersing the base or spraying its openings. Leave the clean fabric accessories off the floor tool until dry, then store them where they will stay clean. Check the cord, hose and attachment latches before the next use. When refilling, account for any water remaining in the boiler and follow the current measured capacity instruction rather than blindly adding a full amount. A clean steam cleaner is still not approved for every floor: the flooring manufacturer's steam permission remains a separate requirement.
