Step 1: Prepare a clean washing area

Step 2: Identify and separate the actual components

A one-piece silicone pump does not need to be cut, pried apart or turned into several components for cleaning. Remove any separate lid or stopper and follow its care instructions as well. If your Haakaa model has detachable connectors, dismantle only the parts shown in its manual. Check the flange, neck and base for tears or tacky deterioration before washing. A damaged milk-contact surface is a replacement question, not an invitation to scrub harder. Keep small accessories away from children while they are off the pump.

Step 3: Wash away milk film with gentle tools

Haakaa's official cleaning guidance favors warm soapy hand washing with a mild, pH-neutral detergent and soft tools. Work around the inside of the neck and the curved base, not just the visible outside. Rotate the pump under good light and check for an oily-looking film. Step 5: Choose a compatible sanitizing process

Haakaa permits steam sanitizing and describes a two-to-three-minute boil in its product guidance. The CDC's general boiling method is five minutes, so do not silently treat the two timings as identical. A compatible steam system used according to its instructions avoids guessing between boiling protocols; confirm a required clinical routine with the care team and Haakaa. Check accessories individually, especially any metal parts before microwave use. Do not add bleach or sterilizing tablets contrary to Haakaa's material guidance, and do not improvise a heat cycle.

Step 6: Air-dry without rubbing the interior

Place the clean pump and separate parts on a clean unused towel or paper towel where they are protected from dust and splashes. Let them air-dry thoroughly. Do not push a used kitchen towel into the pump to make it ready faster; CDC guidance warns that rubbing or patting can transfer germs. Arrange the opening so moisture can escape rather than sealing it with the stopper. Avoid storing a damp pump in a closed travel bag. A transparent wall makes inspection easy, but it does not eliminate hidden droplets.

Step 7: Inspect and store with clean hands

Once dry, handle the pump with clean hands and place it in a clean protected location. Check for new cracks, permanent tackiness or persistent odor before the next use.
