Step-by-step instructions

Agitate the bottle, flange, valve and washable backflow pieces and use a dedicated brush only on open rigid surfaces. Step 4: Rinse and air-dry completely

Rinse each piece under clean running water and place it on a clean unused towel or drying rack. Air-dry rather than rubbing interior milk-contact surfaces with a used dish towel. Keep duckbill lips open only through natural rinsing; do not wedge them apart. Reassembly requires every part to be dry.

Step 5: Use a dishwasher only for approved parts

Spectra permits compatible accessories on the top rack, contained in a closed basket or mesh bag so small valves cannot fall onto a heating element. Choose air drying rather than heat drying, following Spectra's accessory-specific restriction, and check any component exclusions. Hand washing is gentler on silicone pieces whose condition directly affects suction.

Step 6: Sanitize with the correct time by material

When sanitizing is needed, follow Spectra's limits: rigid clear and yellow components may be placed in boiling water removed from heat for roughly three to five minutes, while white silicone accessories should not remain in boiling water longer than two minutes. Do not exceed the current manual's time or boil tubing and pump body.

Step 7: Keep tubing and pump body dry

Spectra says its tubing never needs washing or sanitizing. If clean condensation appears, follow Spectra's drying guidance; if milk or mold enters, replace tubing and investigate backflow assembly. Wipe the unplugged pump body with a lightly damp cloth and prevent moisture from entering tubing ports, buttons or power socket.

Step 8: Reassemble and check suction

Fit the duckbill flat to the flange, seat the backflow membrane and cap correctly, connect dry tubing and attach the bottle. Start at comfortable low suction and check for air leaks. Loss of performance after cleaning often points to a stretched valve, misseated membrane or damp connection rather than a need for harsher cleaning.
