Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the exact cell
Find the model number and its installation and operation manual before mixing anything. Jandy AquaPure families do not all specify the same acid dilution: for example, published instructions for an AquaPure Ei cell use one part acid to ten parts water, while some classic AquaPure manuals specify one pint of acid in two quarts of water. The exact manual takes priority over a generic ratio.
Step 2: Shut down and release pressure
Turn off the chlorinator, pump, and power at the breaker. Close any valves required by the plumbing layout and release filter pressure according to the equipment instructions. Never loosen a union on a running or pressurized system. If the electrical or plumbing isolation is unclear, use a qualified pool professional.
Step 3: Remove and inspect the cell
Disconnect the leads as the manual directs, protect the terminals, and remove the cell without losing or damaging the O-rings. Look between the plates. If they are open and free of chalky scale, do not acid-wash the cell. Repeated acid exposure consumes the plate coating and shortens cell life.
Step 4: Try fresh water first
Use a strong stream from a garden hose to dislodge loose debris. Do not use a screwdriver, wire brush, metal scraper, or pressure-washer nozzle against the plates. If water removes the deposit, rinse and reinstall the cell without acid.
Step 5: Prepare only the manual-specified acid dilution
Work outdoors with splash goggles, acid-resistant gloves, protective clothing, and an acid-compatible bucket. Measure the water first, then slowly add acid to the water—never add water to acid. Do not mix muriatic acid with chlorine, bleach, or any other pool chemical. Stop if the correct concentration, plugs, or disposal method is uncertain.
Step 6: Dissolve visible scale and rinse
Plug or position the cell exactly as its manual shows and expose only the intended plate area and time. Foaming indicates calcium scale is dissolving. Stop when foaming ends or at the manual's maximum time, whichever comes first. Drain the solution into the compatible container and rinse the cell thoroughly with fresh water.
Step 7: Reinstall and check operation
Inspect and correctly seat the O-rings, align the flow direction, hand-tighten unions, and reconnect the leads. Restore valves and power in the manufacturer's order, check carefully for leaks, and confirm the system reading. Follow the acid label and local household hazardous-waste rules for the used solution; do not pour it onto soil or into a storm drain.
