How to Clean a Miele T1 Plinth Filter and Clear Airway Warnings
A Miele T1 dryer can still report restricted airways after the visible door lint screens have been cleaned. The foam plinth filter, also called the toe-kick filter, is a separate component behind the lower access panel. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Stop the dryer and distinguish the two filter locations
End the drying program, switch the appliance off, and follow its electrical-safety instructions before cleaning. Remove loose lint from the door-area filters as part of the normal routine, but do not confuse those mesh screens with the lower foam plinth filter. If you rinse the door filters, they must be carefully dried before returning them. A clean door screen does not prove that the foam filter is clear, and a warning should not simply be reset repeatedly without inspecting the relevant airflow path.
Step 2: Open the lower hatch and remove the foam by its handle
Press the round indentation on the matching lower heat-exchanger access panel. Pull the toe-kick filter out using its handle, then remove the handle from the foam as shown by Miele. The right-side guide pin moves outward when the filter is removed and prevents the hatch from closing without it. Do not defeat that feature or run the dryer with the filter absent. Place the dirty foam over a bowl or bucket so the rinse water and released lint can be collected.
Step 3: Rinse the whole filter while gently compressing it
Rinse thoroughly under running water, directing the stream vertically over the front surface to help release deposits. Gently squeeze several times as water passes through. Miele also suggests laying the filter flat in the collection bowl and pressing lightly with the back of a hand to loosen embedded residue. Work across the whole piece rather than scrubbing only the darkest patch. Do not twist it like a wet rag, pick holes in the foam, or assume a clean-looking outer face means the inside is clear.
Step 4: Inspect the shape and choose cleaning or replacement
Check the rinsed foam for tears, deformation, or edges that no longer sit flush. Damaged foam can let lint reach the heat exchanger, so replace it with the appropriate filter instead of trying to stretch it back into shape. White encrustation is a separate branch in Miele's guidance: the compatible filter may be washed alone, without detergent, at no more than 105°F/40°C and 600 rpm. Confirm that instruction for your specific part; it is not a general machine-wash rule for all dryer filters.
Step 5: Remove water without crushing the foam
Carefully squeeze out water, then place the filter between two hand towels on a flat surface and press gently with a flat hand. Miele says not to reinstall it dripping wet. If a drying program faults after a cleaned filter is reinstalled, excess retained moisture may be responsible; remove more water and allow it to air-dry. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, or aggressive wringing to rush the process. Keep the distinction between this foam procedure and the door screens' drying instructions clear.
Step 6: Clean the handle and inspect the exposed heat exchanger
Wipe lint off the handle with a damp cloth. Look at the exposed heat exchanger without touching the sharp cooling fins with your fingers. If visible loose lint needs removal, Miele permits a vacuum dust brush passed very lightly over the fins without pressure. Do not scrape, bend, hose, or dismantle the heat exchanger during routine filter care. If deposits cannot be removed with the permitted gentle method, arrange service rather than converting an accessible inspection into deeper appliance disassembly.
Step 7: Refit the filter, clean the seal, and check the result
Fit the foam to its handle in the correct orientation and push the complete filter fully into place, which also pushes the guide pin back. Wipe lint from the hatch area without damaging the rubber seal, then close the panel normally. Pour the collected wash water through a coffee filter or similar filter and put the trapped lint in household waste. On the next normal drying cycle, note whether the warning returns. Persistent faults need further model-specific diagnosis, not endless repeated resets.
