How to Clean a Newton Crib Mattress
A Newton crib mattress has an unusual advantage and an unusual cleaning requirement: both its removable cover and polymer Wovenaire core are washable, but they are washed separately. Newton allows the cover in a cold machine wash with mild detergent and low-heat tumble drying, while the core can be spot-cleaned or rinsed in a shower or tub with cool water and mild detergent or vinegar. The core must drain and dry fully before the cover returns. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Remove bedding and identify every layer
Take the mattress out of the crib and remove the fitted sheet, waterproof pad if used and Newton cover. Read each label separately. Do not put the polymer core in a household washing machine, and do not assume an accessory pad follows the main cover's instructions.
Step 2: Remove dry debris and assess the spill
Vacuum hair and crumbs from the cover and core with a clean soft attachment. For a small surface mark, decide whether only the cover needs laundering or the core also received liquid. Treat urine, vomit or widespread contamination as a reason to clean both layers rather than hiding moisture inside.
Step 3: Machine-wash the cover cold
Zip and prepare the cover as its label shows, then machine-wash it in cold water with mild detergent. Wash separately from rough fasteners and skip bleach or fabric softener unless the exact label explicitly says otherwise. An extra rinse can clear detergent from the quilted surface without stronger chemistry.
Step 4: Dry the cover on low heat
Newton's care guidance allows low-heat tumble drying for the cover. Use low—not a hot sanitary setting—and remove it when dry to prevent unnecessary heat exposure. If the exact cover label calls for air drying, follow that version instead. Keep the cover off the core until both are fully dry.
Step 5: Spot-clean or rinse the Wovenaire core
Place the core in a clean shower or tub. For a spot, use cool water and a small amount of mild detergent; for a full wash, rinse the whole open polymer structure. Newton also references vinegar as an option. Do not combine vinegar with bleach or another chemical and do not use hot water.
Step 6: Rinse all cleaner from the core
Run cool clean water through the core from multiple directions while gently supporting its full width. Do not twist, fold sharply or scrub the strands with a stiff brush. Continue until no suds or odor remain, because detergent trapped within the open structure will be enclosed by the cover.
Step 7: Drain and air-dry the core completely
Stand or angle the core on a clean ventilated surface so water can drain from every channel. Turn it during drying and use airflow, not a hair dryer or concentrated heater. Check the center and lower edge for coolness, weight or droplets; surface dryness alone is not enough.
Step 8: Re-cover and return it flat to the crib
Once core and cover are fully dry, refit the cover evenly without compressing or folding the core. Inspect the zipper and surface for damage. Put the mattress flat in the crib with a properly fitted sheet and no pillows, loose bedding or improvised padding, following current safe-sleep directions.
