How to Clean a PS5 and DualSense Controller

Step 1: Shut down and unplug completely

Turn the PS5 off rather than placing it in Rest Mode. Wait for the power indicator to stop blinking, disconnect the AC cord from the electrical outlet and console, and unplug HDMI, USB, Ethernet, and accessories. Disconnect the DualSense controller. Let a warm console cool before cleaning and move it to a stable, well-lit surface.

Step 2: Dry-wipe the console cabinet

Use a clean soft dry cloth on the console's plastic exterior and accessible glossy or matte areas. Support the console so it cannot slide. Sony says not to spray or apply alcohol, paint thinner, benzene, insecticide, or other volatile substances, and not to use chemically treated cloths. Do not let dampness run into seams, buttons, ports, or vents.

Step 3: Vacuum exterior vent dust

Use a low-powered handheld vacuum to lift dust in and around the air vents. Hold the nozzle just above the surface rather than striking slats or forming a tight seal. Work slowly around the intake and exhaust areas. Do not blow dust inward with a high-pressure air can, and never vacuum while the console is connected to power.

Step 4: Remove covers only with the correct model instructions

Sony recommends removing compatible PS5 covers to vacuum dust trapped underneath, but the release points differ among original PS5, slim, and Pro chassis. Place the console on a soft cloth, remove any stand or feet as directed, and follow the official manual for your CFI model. Do not open screws, fan assemblies, the power supply, or other service areas.

Step 5: Vacuum accessible dust beneath the covers

With the correct covers safely removed, use the handheld vacuum at low power over only the user-accessible dust areas shown in Sony's guide. Keep the nozzle from contacting the fan, wires, vents, or internal surfaces. Do not use a wet cloth inside the console. Refit every cover until it clicks or seats exactly as the model guide shows.

Step 6: Dry-clean ports and connectors

Sony says dirty ports and connectors may not conduct electricity properly and should be wiped with a dry cloth. Use a clean dry cloth around the exterior of USB, HDMI, Ethernet, AC, and controller connectors. Do not insert a cotton swab, brush, metal tool, or liquid into a port. A bent, burned, corroded, or loose port requires service.

Step 7: Wipe the DualSense controller

Make sure the controller is disconnected. Use a soft dry cloth over the grips, touch pad, buttons, triggers, shoulder buttons, sticks, speaker area, and seams. Turn the cloth often to lift oil rather than spread it. Sony's DualSense manual says not to use solvents, other chemicals, or chemically treated cleaning cloths and not to allow contact with liquids.

Step 8: Release loose controller debris dry

Hold the controller so loosened debris falls away and use a clean dry soft brush around stick collars, buttons, and seams. Do not drip alcohol into a stick or button, probe gaps with a pin, or use heavy compressed-air pressure. Sticky controls that remain unresponsive after dry exterior cleaning need troubleshooting or repair, not deeper liquid cleaning.

Step 9: Clean a game disc from center outward

Hold a disc by its edge and center hole. Use a soft cloth to wipe lightly in straight strokes from the center toward the outer edge. Do not polish in circles, and do not use benzene, paint thinner, record cleaner, solvent, or anti-static spray. Store the dry disc upright in its case away from heat and direct sunlight.

Step 10: Restore ventilation and reconnect

Return the PS5 to a firm surface with at least 10 cm (4 inches) of space from a wall, unobstructed vents, and no long-fiber carpet underneath. Confirm covers and stand or feet are secure. Make sure all ports and cable ends are dry and dust-free, then reconnect without forcing a plug.
