How to Clean and Sterilize an Elvie Pump
Elvie Pump separates into washable milk-contact parts and a powered Hub that must stay dry. Elvie directs owners to rinse washable pieces in cool water, wash them in warm water with mild dish soap or on the dishwasher's top rack, and dry them completely before assembly. The Hub is wiped with a damp cloth, while its black semicircular optical sensor must remain clean, dry and residue-free so bottle volume sensing works. Before first use, approved parts are cleaned and sterilized, but Elvie excludes UV sterilization and limits microwave or steam exposure. This guide covers the original wearable Elvie Pump, not Elvie Stride or Elvie Curve, whose components and instructions differ.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Power down and separate the Hub
Finish the session, turn off the pump and remove it from the breast. Wash hands, then disassemble the washable bottle, valve, spout, seal and breast shield as the guide shows. Keep the electronic Hub and charging cable outside the basin. Never rinse or immerse the Hub.
Step 2: Rinse washable parts in cool water
Elvie recommends first rinsing the washable parts in cool water at about 20°C. This clears milk before protein can be fixed by hotter water. Rinse passages and both sides of flexible parts without using a sharp tool on valve slits or stretching the seal.
Step 3: Wash warm with mild dish soap
Wash the disassembled parts in warm water at about 30°C with mild dishwashing soap, using a dedicated clean basin rather than a dirty sink. Reach accessible bottle and shield surfaces with a soft dedicated brush, then rinse each part in cool water for roughly 10 to 15 seconds until soap is gone.
Step 4: Use the dishwasher only for washable pieces
Elvie also allows washable components on the top rack of a dishwasher. Secure small valves and seals in a closed basket so they cannot contact a heating element. The Hub and charger never enter the dishwasher. Inspect silicone after the cycle for distortion or residue.
Step 5: Sterilize before first use and when appropriate
After cleaning, sterilize approved parts before first use using five minutes in boiling water or a suitable microwave, steam or cold-water method. Elvie says not to use UV sterilization and not to expose parts to microwave or steam sterilization longer than five minutes. Use the current guide for later sanitizing needs.
Step 6: Wipe the Hub and protect its sensor
Use only a clean damp cloth on the Hub exterior, then dry it. Pay attention to the black semicircular optical sensor: it must remain dry and free of milk film, soap and lint. Do not spray cleaner into charging contacts, seams or the sensor recess, and do not use abrasive or antibacterial solvent.
Step 7: Air-dry every washable component
Place washed parts on a clean rack and let them dry completely, with valves and seals separated. Do not wipe interior milk-contact surfaces with a used towel. Store parts dry and away from direct sunlight. Even a small droplet between seal and shield can affect assembly or sensor readings.
Step 8: Reassemble and confirm the seal
Fit the dry valve, spout and seal in the order shown, checking that edges lie flat and the bottle clicks onto the Hub. Confirm the optical sensor area remains clean. If suction or bottle sensing is wrong, disassemble and reseat clean dry parts before replacing components or contacting Elvie.
